Here's this one in all her glory. I'm happy with it for what I've paid for it.

I know it's a Sport but as it shares the TDV6 with the L405, once I start stripping the engine down I'll start putting some pictures up Smile

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

I opened the back door on the 5.0 on Thursday and my heart sank as I saw the dreaded brown stain by the sill cover. Shocked

Thursday evening saw it going straight into the workshop and onto the ramp to have the sill covers removed. I was relieved when this was all I saw.

I put the wire brush on the angle grinder and started to tidy it up and was left with this.

I then coated the bare metal with Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 and after 24hrs was left with this.

I'm pleased I caught it early enough before it's done any damage and I can clean up both sides whilst I'm at it. I've currently got the arch liners removed and will tidy up all of the back end.

I've ordered some Lanoguard to treat the inner sills, it comes with some Lanoguard grease that I can spread on the bits that suffer the most. When I'm doing my annual service I'll whip the liners out and top everything up to keep it right now I've caught it.

Whilst I was under the car giving it a good going over I found a few bushes that had a little bit of movement in them so I've ordered bushes for the rear wishbones as well as the upper and lower bushes in the rear hubs.

Whilst the rear wishbones are off I'll give them a good wire brush, rust treatment and paint them too. I'll get the long straw on the Lanoguard and try and get a load of it into the rear subframe whilst I'm at it.

I noticed that the tyres (Continentals) are wearing on the shoulders. I think this is because I replaced all the bushes and ball joints at the front not long after I got the car and didn't bother to get the alignment done as it drove perfectly. Looks like it was good enough to drive perfectly but not well enough to stop it scrubbing the tyres so at the same time I've ordered her a full set of Pirelli Scorpion All Seasons with the PNCS Noise Cancellation foam.

Now I'm just debating having my wheels refurbished whilst the tyres are off the rims.

After I saw the surface rust behind the sill covers I decided to remove the wheel arch liners as well. I'm really glad I did as there was a lot of surface rust to treat in there too.

The NSR wheel arch was easy to do with the wire brush on the angle grinder to burst all the bubbles. I cleaned up as much as I could and then used a hand wire brush to get into the nooks and crannies before finishing some of them off with a wire brush on the drill.

The OSR was a right pain as there is no room to get the grinder in due to the fuel filler neck. I did what I could with the wire brush on the grinder which wasn't much, the rest of it I did with a scraper and the hand wire brush before doing a few bits with the wire brush in the drill.

The NSR I went straight for Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 which converted all the bare metal and rust into a black finish ready for paint. 2 coatings of this have got it nicely sorted.

The OSR I coated with Bilt Hamber Deox Gel which sticks to the surface and treats the rust. I did two applications of this leaving the gel on the metalwork for 2 hrs before washing it all off with warm water and a cloth. Once this had dried I then gave it 2 good coatings of Hydrate 80 to cure all the rust.

I've now got 2 totally treated back arches. The picture make it look a lot worse then it actually is.

Once the Hydrate 80 has had 24hrs to cure I'm going to spray all of the arch on both sides with a galvanised primer before giving it all a good coating with Bilt Hamber Epoxy Mastic.

It's a job I hate doing and it's 100% a labour of love but it's nice knowing that it's sorted.

I decided to drop both rear wishbones off to be blasted and powder coated so they should come back nice and clean before long too. Thumbs Up

After the Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 had cured for 24hrs, I built up 3 coats of silver galvanising spray on the car tonight.

I'm really pleased with how it's come out so far.

I'll leave this to cure for 24hrs now and then in the wheel arches and along the sills will be given a good thick coating of Bilt Hamber Epoxy-Mastic.

https://bilthamber.com/product/epoxy-mastic/

This is the same stuff that I used on the 4.2 SC that I rebuilt a few years ago. It was good stuff and seemed to leave a good coating.

I've dropped the rear wishbones off to be shot blasted and powder coated whilst they're off the car to keep them nice as well.

Annoyingly, I noticed tonight that the gator on one of the rear toe control arms is perished.

To get the bolt out, you need to remove the height sensor! Censored

Annoyingly, the bolts that secure the height sensor to the bracket are turning inside the sensor and the bolt that holds the bracket to the subframe is an allen key head on it which after 13 years on the car doesn't want to function as an allen key head any more! Censored

Hoping I can get the bolt out as I really don't want to remove the subframe!

Nice job on the corrosion David, that should keep it back for some time, I guess you will be doing the inside of all the box sections...?

Sorry about your conundrum with removing that bolt, hope it has a successful outcome... Thumbs Up Pete

Yea, once all the bits I've ordered have arrived I'm going to pop the bungs out of the sills and load them up with lanoguard. I'm hoping that with them being fairly enclosed that the lanoguard will last quite well in them.

To be honest, for all the time it takes, I'm thinking of popping the sill covers off and removing the wheel arches once a year just to keep on top of everything.

Finally got the rear wishbones back from blasting and powder coating today. They look great and hopefully won't rust for a long time now!

Just need to get the bushes in them now and then refit them to the car but before I do that I'll fill the insides of the wishbones with Bilt Hamber cavity wax to protect the insides of them too.

Managed to get the bushes back in these this afternoon. They're big and heavy so awkward to get in the press.

Annoyingly though, I managed to screw up the orientation of the last bush I fitted. I'm not sure how as I made sure it was lined up right so I can only think it's rotated slightly in the press.

This picture shows the bush correctly lined up with the wishbone.

This shows the one I got wrong:

I can't work out whether to remove it and redo it or not. It likely won't come out intact so I'll probably end up having to buy another bush. It's not right though...

I also blew out all the remaining sand from the shot blasting and filled then with Bilt Hamber Dynax cavity wax. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Well, I was never going to leave it alone, was I.

I turned a piece of steel on the lathe down to the exact outer diameter of the bush, bored a hole in the middle of it to allow for the centre of the bush to slot into it and put the whole lot back in the press. Amazingly, I got the bush out totally unscathed.

I then aligned it in the wishbone again and started it in the vice this time so I could ensure the orientation was correct, put the whole lot back in the press again and sent it.

Thankfully, this time it's aligned properly and matches the other side.

I managed to chip the powder coating just on the edge of the radius the bush goes into so it was tidied up with some hammerite and it's now ready for refitting when the rest of the parts I've ordered finally turn up.
