4.4 M62 or 3.6 TDV8

Been looking around at L322's lately, a current P38 V8 owner..

Can't help but spot the 4.4 2002-2005 M62 bargains on the market are they worth a punt when compared to the latter 3.6 TDV8?

no. go for as modern an engine as you can afford. The 4.4L TDV8 is sublime compared to any of the others.

Speaking from experience if you want an L322, go for the 4.4 V8 Diesel - if you have any doubts just go for a test drive. Or if you want petrol get the 5.0 SC this is the only other engine I would consider. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

I went through similar and bought my first l322 last weekend. It took a while and it's higher Mike's than I would have liked but went for a early 2006 jag 4.4, as had full main dealer service history and everything works, well it did yesterday.
On the drive home it did 26.7 at 70mph on cruise control which I was very happy about.
Around town be rubbish obviously
I was too scared of the diesel going wrong and costing what I paid for it to fix

@Drellis.

The jag is a great engine and copes with most things. Well done on finding a good one. The BMW engine is easier to work on than TDV8 but suffers in that it is much older, can have PCV and chain guide probs, but otherwise a goodie. I've still got my 2004 4.4L V8 but it's struggling a bit at the moment. My 2011 TDV8 however is purrrrfect.

'04 MY M62 owner here:

They're cheap for a reason. I would steer clear of all those if budget permits.

As others have mentioned, the 4.4 TDV8 is the one to own but beware of emission regulations with diesels...

IMHO the most important thing in buying a 322 is the rotting of the rear sills, inner sills and wheel arches, if you can't weld and fabricate you are looking at a couple of grand for a decent job...

You need to have a good look around the rear jacking point which sticks out the bottom of the plastic sill cover, it's a plastic block fixed into the sill, a screwdriver all around it will give a bit of a clue. Pull the cover away from the body in the rear door shut and shine a torch down, this is the best way to check other than removing the trim which most sellers would not let you do....

After that a well looked after car with no faults and everything working, then I'd worry about the engine...

It all depends on how much money you have, you can buy them cheap but they are not a cheap car to run, if you can't do big jobs yourself these fatties will cost serious money to keep on the road.... Thumbs Up Pete

I’m hoping diesel drops in price to £0.50 /L, road tax is £12 and insurance becomes free. All more likely than ULEZ being kicked out…. Rolling with laughter 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

3.6 tdv8 shouldn't really be an option when the 4.4 tdv8 is newer, more economical, quieter, has more power and comes with the far better 8 speed auto. It is also not that much more expensive to purchase.
