Nicely done, Pete!

Nice to see people doing DIY on the L405’s. You’ve probably saved yourself a whole world of pain in the future in dealing with that aluminium corrosion on the body now rather then in a couple of years time so probably a good job you had a leak!

Thanks lads,

Phoenix, Both sorted now, should be fine for years... Thumbs Up

David, yes, I knew when I bought it that the pipe failure was a "when" rather than an "if" and to be honest I've not been worried about it but it has been there in the back of my mind that it would need doing, and could open a can of worms, so I'm kind of glad it's all done now and I think I got off lightly compared to some others....

I finished it off today, getting the underneath sill covers on is a bit of a faf but it's done now, I took off the running boards and took the mountings off them, cleaned and Tef Gel all the bolts so that's all the bolts I could find that were into aluminium are now cleaned and sorted, all box sections treated and any other area I could see treated... I do have to say the "E" coat on 99% of the underside was in great condition.

I think I've done enough to make this fatty last for a good number of years... Thumbs Up Pete

Oh, and if anyone is reading this and going to do theirs it took about 1 1/2 ltrs of Cold Climate power steering fluid to top the system back up.... Thumbs Up Pete

Great job. Good effort. I’d just need to figure out to lift mine without a post lift. V8 or else ...

I don't think it would be easy on the floor but take your time and plan well and it should be doable... the rear pipe runs between the floor and the rear, nearside, running board mounting bracket so you need to support the fatty somewhere other than that jacking point. The front pipe needs some height under the car to fit the pipe through without removing the front subframe....

Good luck... Thumbs Up Pete

It says in the WM that to replace the front pipe you have to remove the front subframe, well it's not really necessary, the front pipe has two joins in it and if you undo these you can thread the pipe in from different directions around the front subframe, it was a pretty quick and painless job...

Pete, any chance of some additional insight here with this front ACE pipe removal and refit? I have my front ACE pipes disconnected from the roll bar, and have undone the two joints midway across the front cross member, but can't figure which way to feed the old pipes out and new ones in without them getting stuck?

TIA

No, it seems to have self bled itself after a short while... there must be some small amount of return like most hydraulics. The car will throw up a "car leans too much" fault if it's not working so it must be OK...

Nohandsignals,

It seemed obvious when doing it...!!! you have to persuade the pipes to go in, they will bend quite a bit before they are permanently out of shape, you need a bit of mechanical experience, you have to know what you can and can't get away with. It's not really an easy DIY job.... I've slept a lot since!!! I think I took some suspension arms off and a few other bits....

I didn't do a full write up as it was replaced rather quickly as it had been taking a lift up for three weeks while the parts arrived and it takes time to photograph every step, sorry.... Pete

Thanks, Pete. Maybe I’ll try taking the right front strut out to see if that gives me room to rotate the pipes out from the crossmember where I’ve disconnected the two right hand lines.

Just wanted to follow up and say once the right front hand strut was out, the right hand side of the front ARC pipe was “easy” to rotate into place and reconnect to its joint midway across the top of the subframe and at the ARC bar itself.

FYI, I fed the ARC pipe up from under the car near the ARC bar itself, out into the RH wheel well via the gap between the sub frame and the chassis leg, and once it was through that gap, it was easy to rotate the pipe rearward, back towards the rear part of the front subframe, and remake the connection there.
