Have I broken my fuel gauge? IID tool help needed.

Hi all,

I was trying to do what I thought was going to be a fairly straightforward task today and it's all gone pear shaped.

The fuel gauge on my 06 4.2 gets plenty of exercise but was slightly offset. When filled up the gauge was a good few mm to the right of the fuel mark and when it shows empty and the light goes on I can put about 97litres in the tank which is getting a bit close to the mark.

What I was trying to do was nudge the gauge a few mm to the left and thought I could do this with the IID tool.

I went to

Control I/O --> IPC (Instrument Pack) --> Fuel Gauge Pointer Position (%), as it was sitting slightly to the right of 1/2 on the gauge I thought I'd select 50% and that would sort it. I selected 50% and hit modify, the gauge then moved but not quite to where I wanted it, I selected 45% and hit modify but nothing happened so I exited the Control I/O mentu and tried again, but now the moved way off the mark I wanted in the opposite direction.

I'm feeling a bit of a fool now for assuming that "Fuel Gauge Pointer Position (%)" actually meant the percentage the gauge would show at whereas I now think it works differently to that. Can anyone help? 2006 L322 Vogue SE 4.2

Update:

After leaving the car off for 30mins, it seems to have reset itself to how it was before.

I'd still like to "calibrate" the fuel gauge though if such a thing is possible. 2006 L322 Vogue SE 4.2

Maybe try 100% with it full as this would be a likley reference point? My gauge is never at 1/2 way when I know I'm 1/2 way through a tank of fuel with regards to the distance to empty on the trip. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I always fill it up to the top, that's what I was using as the reference, when filled up to 100% the needle goes a few mm past the top mark and doesn't hit the top mark until I've been driving for a few hours.

This means that it's completely empty when the gauge is still showing roughly 1/8 of a tank.

It's not the end of world as I know when it needs to be filled up and can allow for the error, it's just the OCD part of me would like it to be accurate which it would be if I could just offset the needed 2mm to the left of where it currently sits.

Edit:

Ahh I see what you're saying, sorry misunderstood at first.

Fill up the tank and then go into the Control I/O and select 100% and apply that. I'll try that next time I fill up. 2006 L322 Vogue SE 4.2

Still not been to fill up but checked my IID tool and couldn't find a setting for the fuel gauge. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
