Coolant was taking an age to get up to temperature and, on a steady run, was only sitting a third of the way on the gauge. Fuel consumption also seemed to be worse than the usual dreadful figure, down by 10 - 15%.
Decided to have a look at the thermostat.
Instead of draining the coolant onto the floor, I used a wet and dry vacuum cleaner sucking out coolant from the expansion tank. After removing engine cover and intake plenum, easy access to thermostat housing and loosened bolts. With the wet and dry still on, I pulled the housing off. No loss of coolant with approx 2.5 ltrs recovered to vacuum cleaner tub. Thermostat removed and noticed valve seal damaged. Replacement thermostat bought and fitted. All buttoned up with just shy of 2.5 ltrs of coolant replenished. A fair bit of bleeding carried out but suspect will take a while to completely get the air out. Well pleased to see that gauge now reading correctly.

This is a far easier job than on a Fiat 500๐ Previous cars:
