Data & Statistics

Every year a list of the most reliable brands, and models, is published somewhere.

1. Does anyone know how this data is collected? By whom?
2. Is any data available for Range Rover, subdivided by model/engine/production year?

On this forum the consensus on a thread was that the most reliable engine was the petrol SC 5.0 however, I am also interested in transmission, suspensions, etc. and I prefer clear cut data, rather than consensus.

Thank you, yes, something like that, even thought this is incomplete and does not rate for reliability which was my main interest.

Does anyone else know of any reliability ratings subdivided by engine/year?

The reason for my question pertains understanding which are the most reliable RR engines in the L322 lineup.

In another post there was a consensus that the petrol 5.0 SC was the most reliable, but I was hoping for data & stats.

Any help or comment would be apprciated

I don’t think you will find any specific data on reliability, just peoples possibly subjective findings on their specific ownership experiences.

Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey

My 2004 322 had the BMW 4.4 petrol. It failed after 9 1/2 years and 97,000 miles, blowing coolant out of the back of the engine. It was a bit noisy at higher revs (I think BMW like that as "sporty") but smooth and pleasant enough otherwise. It is the only engine in one of my RRs that has failed and so I'd not recommend it.

My 2012 WM had the TDV8 4.4. It worked well and did not have the complexity of the later AdBlue system. I had no problems with the engine, nice torque for towing and pleasant to drive, 5 years and 57,000 odd miles. I was able to get the revs over 2,500 most trips so never had problems with oil accumulation in the second (higher rev) turbo. Not ideal if you do lots of short/low speed journeys.

My current engine is the 5.0SC (405). It has been fine, 6 years and 61,000 miles. Smooth and quiet at lower revs, refined, capacity for overtaking in a different dimension to the TDV8, picks up speed very effortlessly, one has to watch that to avoid licence problems. Power a bit much in some situations, e.g. quick exit from steep uphill and badly surfaced junction can have traction control coming on with winter/off road tyres. Note the 5.0SCs in the 322 and maybe the early 405s had plastic chain guides which can wear out, later ones have metal which are better. Performance/economy will be poorer in 322 given extra weight. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Thank you both for the useful insight. Looks like I should look for a 4.2SC

Besides marketing reasons, where there any other reasons why the L322 never received the 5.0SC?

The 4.4 BMW lump in my '02 was just about the only bit that didn't fail on that car. Coolant issues leading to gearbox and transfer box issues, and endless electronic gremlins. In 4 years of ownership there was never a point when everything worked exactly as it should - though it remained mostly driveable - but had to be recovered half a dozen times. Sold on at 120k+ and the engine was still fine at that point.

The '56reg 4.2 SC served me very well for 5 years - no issues at all. Sold on to Quavey on here at 120k miles. He found a couple of things to do over the next year or so, but from memory nothing serious and he then sold on to a mate of his.

The '12 5.0 SC was very good for 4 years but the chains finally went at about 108k miles - and sold on here as a repairable. Only other issue I had over the 4 years was Aircon - needed new compressor and issues with that led to a new condensor and other linked bits. Mike - MPx

You can get the 5.0 in the states, if you don't mind a left hooker this has got to be the ulitmate in clean L322s.

This thread is in the L405 section, so might need moving.

I imagine the 5.0 non supercharged was never available in the UK as we had the 4.4TDV8 which I imagine would prob out perform it, so not needed.

The TDV8 was not available in the US so there was a gap to fill.

Take your time, you need to drive a few of the different engine choices, even if you are not keen on the exact car, it will help you decide which engine you prefer, and then narrow down your search.

I appreciate there aren’t that many places selling a variety of cars that have all the engines in, but keep an eye out near you and if something comes up, take it for a drive, you don’t have to buy it. It will help you narrow your search. The Vogue Centre usually has a few models in, but prob a good distance from you.
