Front “wobbly” when stopping

All, I’ve done a bit of searching on this issue and I've seen a few threads that are close but not quite the same.

So here’s the scenario. On the odd occasion, just before the car stops under normal braking, the front end does a bit of a jiggle, side to side and then disappears, this is around probably 5-10mph. There are no knocking noises, just this odd front end jiggle and I can’t establish a pattern or external influence to this happening.
Since I only have the L322 to compare with, I do notice that front end does tend to dip more as I’m stopping, although this may be normal.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Well, I went to get my tracking done a year or so ago, and when I drove on the ramp the chap said don’t bother getting out…. He had seen the body move forward and move sideways slightly after the wheels had stopped. Bushes gone on lower suspension. Hard to tell at MOT apparently with the weight of car on.

Just a thought.

Since it’s a 2017, have the front lower arms been replaced yet?
Done mine recently, (also 2017) you can grab the bar and twist it slightly by hand if worn, the new one will not budge. I had no knocking, but the turn-in was much better when cornering afterwards.

It’s a DIY driveway job, if you have the right tools, there’s loads of info on here if you find these are the cause, which is likely.

Search “Front Lower Arms” in the L405 sections……… “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Yes, just jack it up, wheel dangling, stick in an axle stand that side and grab the arm with both hands and try twisting it with a bit of gusto.
Any movement at all by only human power or with a short bar, means its on its way out.

These are usually the first joint to go, followed soon by others such as drop link bushes, then the rear and top ones a year or two later. It’s a heavy car, with lots of rubber bushings to keep everything comfy for you, so all of these are really a service item. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Quick update, as I’ve been away on business and haven’t had a lot of time to drive the car.

What i can say now is that I don’t believe this isn’t caused by anything mechanical, worn or otherwise.
it’s like something is triggering this action. It happens at around 6mph and stops when the car comes to a stop. The reason I don’t think this is anything worn, is that the movement doesn’t gradually subside, it just stops. I’m wondering if there’s a sensor in the ARC that’s getting upset? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Alan, you didn’t answer my question:

“Have the front lower arms been replaced yet?”

If not, your vehicle is getting to an age when these, and other (especially front) suspension components WILL require replacement.

The effects may become apparent as the vehicle comes to a stop, i.e. in the last few mph coming to a standstill, or when turning sharply at slow speed to avoid an obstacle. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

To answer your question Gremlin, I don’t know but due to how this movement manifests itself, I find it very hard to imagine it’s due to any worn suspension components but when the MOT is due, I’ll ask for them to be checked. Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

How many miles do you have? Mine needed replacing at 48K last year as an advisory on the MOT. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

OK, so it’s possible they have already been done, and are due again?
You have to think of the suspension bushings on the fullfat as consumables, like tyres or brake pads.
Being a rubber part they wear out and age.
It’s easy enough to check them yourself, but if you have an MOT due soon, they will check them anyway.
