L322 Illuminated Treads - Restore & Repair

You know the world's gone to pot when your drivers side illuminated tread is not illuminating!
First world problems I'd say!

So I'll try to find out why and hopefully help anyone else.

It also needs a real tidy up as it's scratched up pretty badly.
I'll build up this post over next week or so.

Here's how they look:

You can see they're really scratched.

The light: first step, check the supply lead
Whipped of the working passenger side and plugged it into
the driver side and found it working. Did it the other way round
to be sure (drivers side tread plugged into passenger supply): dead.
So the light in the tread is def. dead.

Turning them over I see this:

Might give them a ring tomorrow.
Suspect they will say speak to LR. But worth a try.

Thought I'd peel back the black box but it's resin sealed. It probably steps down 12v to a lower voltage. Under the black box there is a silicone-sealed joint where the cables switch to ribbon. I was looking for a dry solder joint. But it looks ok. Well water-proofed by the manufacturer though.

Next, since I can't ring them today I'll try to tidy up the metal a bit.

Also, over the years a few boots, heels etc have taken a toll on the fret-cut lettering:

I gently levered them back up.

I realised I'd be taking off the anodising but, given the state and also the light not working nothing to loose really. So I started polishing:

Overall a bit of an improvement. The stainless inlay came back easily.
Used 300 grit wet & dry, then 600 then 1000. Then 'Silvo' metal polish.

Will wax it for now and if I can get the light working then I'll clear lacquer it.

On the aluminium, the brushed areas were ok - I just used a rough grit wet & dry (started at 150 but then had to go rougher to 120 to get rid of the scratch). See before & after below.

But I couldn't get rid of this scratched area where the smooth anodised finish was:

Might have to just get it re-anodised after all. If I do that I'll have to take it all apart though...

Back it situ this morning, and in daylight, it looks pretty good.

Light still needs looking at, watch this space...

I’ve done the lights last year easy buy two cob strip lights for each side and I used a glue gun to fix them under the panel after stripping off the old lights and then used the gaffer tape to dory it up then refitted and like is great, I used blue but any colour can be used

Ok great - do you have a link to what you bought Scott?

BTW I rang GSM and they said talk to LR so I'm not going to bother, ready to try an alternative.
I know I can buy new plates - I think they are £150 a piece.
