I am watching this post with interest Pete.
Like you I have never visited Ireland, but now I live within a stones throw of the Holyhead ferry terminal that might change, particularly if you start posting lots of pictures of nice places.

I miss driving over in Ireland in a truck since I've given up doing European. Just so nice and chilled on the roads over there, especially on the national roads. There used to be truck stops over there called mother Hubbard's, restaurant quality food, sadly all closed now.
A few tips, if coming and going out of Dublin port, the tunnel is a toll, you can avoid it but takes you the long way round and gets very congested. When driving on the national roads, if a truck in front of you moves over to the hard shoulder, that's your queue to pass it. Beware of unmarked police cars parked up on the nationals just waiting to catch the speeders. They are usually in much older cars like mondeos.
A lot of the services and petrol stations have excellent takeaway food especially the breakfast baguettes, you must sample the white pudding, amazing. Enjoy your trip, the Irish are very friendly folk.
