Charging Issues When Hot – Alternator Stops Charging

Hi all,

Just to add to my earlier post about the parking sensor and camera issues (i have no issues then, they all come at once), I’m also having a problem with charging when the car gets warm.

I’ve got a 2016 L405 SDV8 AB, and while everything works fine in cooler temperatures - the car runs excellent, once it hits around 22°C outside temp or above, the alternator seems to stop charging the battery properly. This has already resulted in the battery being depleted a couple of times and has left me stranded.
The car has new batteries, and I’ve cleaned and replaced all the earth points, including those in the wheel well. What usually happens is the ‘D’ on the dash starts flashing, followed by a gearbox fault warning, and then the car eventually cuts out.

I’m not sure what’s causing it – possibly the BMS or the alternator regulator?
If anyone’s experienced anything similar or has any suggestions on what to check next, I’d really appreciate the help.

First thing to do is look for fault codes, you need a good independent or buy a Gap IID tool

https://www.gap-diagnostic.com/products/iidtool/

Reads codes, re writes the CCF, shows live values and a host of other things.... Thumbs Up Pete

Another question to ask. I've replaced the drivers side earth point with a new drilled rivnut and I've done the one in the boot (negative battery cable). Is there an earth point in the UK passenger front wheel well? I'm thinking that could be part of the issue? 2016 Range Rover L405 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

Yes there is, mine fell apart on touching it... Red circle is ground on car, yellow circle is the wires...

You can see in this photo that the whole stud had corroded through, there was less than 1mm square of clean aluminium... Shocked

Thanks Pete, your response is appreciated. A job for the weekend and i'll see if that helps with the temperature charging issue. 2016 Range Rover L405 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

Have you logged the alternator output current as the regulator could be breaking down when it gets hot and actually putting a short onto the charging circuit, followed by 2 rapidly drained batteries. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

I haven’t no. I wouldn’t know where to start with something like that, so will have to ask a garage. Mechanical I’m quite good with IMO, anything electrical I have no idea. 2016 Range Rover L405 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography
