Gearbox oil change

My 4.4 has done 86k miles. Should I be thinking about changing the gearbox oil and any filters involved. 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.

JLR state that the gearbox is sealed for life... however, ZF recommend servicing the gearbox between 60 and 80k miles depending on usage.

If it were my car I'd definitely be having the gearbox oil changed as prevention is a lot cheaper than a cure when it comes to gearbox issues!

A lot of local specialists have a machine to flush the gearbox or you can find the details for a chap called Ian Bodsworth (his company name is updates by bodsy) who travels to you and can flush the gearbox, change your diff oils and transfer box oils on your driveway for sensible money. A lot of people have commented on how good his service is. Thumbs Up

First thing i did when i bought mine.

Prevention much better than cure.

Get it done.

I would certainly go with the advice from ZF rather than JLR. They are clear on the need to service it.

I serviced my gearbox last year when it was 8 years and 60k miles by using 20L of oil to complete 3 oil changes (driving 100 miles between each) and then on the 4th oil change I also changed the filter pan.

The oil that came out was pretty dark so I think it was well worth it.

A genuine filter was £100 and I used Smith & Allen Lifeguard oil that was also circa £100. If you use ZF branded oil it is circa £30 a litre.

Or you are looking at around £400 to £500 for a garage to do it.

Just had a quote for gearbox and fluid service - £1,700. They must be busy! Current > FFRR 2018 3.0 SDV6
