GAP IID tool

I've been offered the loan of an IID tool from someone local to me. Is it feasible to do this or a bit of a none starter. Would I need login details and download an app? Sorry if this is a bit of a daft question.

If it’s just to check and clear faults, you should be fine.
If you want to change any settings, you’d need to pay a fee to have the tool enabled for you VIN number. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

The GAP IIDTool (commonly used for Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles) is VIN-locked, meaning:
• It is registered to a specific vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).
• Full functionality, including advanced diagnostics and service procedures like forced DPF regeneration, is only available for the registered VIN.

So, to directly answer your question:
• No, you cannot use the full functions of a GAP IIDTool (including forced DPF regen) on a different car than the one it is registered to.
• On unregistered vehicles, the tool will operate in limited (read-only or very basic) mode—enough to read fault codes, but not to perform advanced service tasks.

Options if you want to use it on multiple vehicles:
1. Add Extra VINs: GAP Diagnostics allows you to purchase additional VIN licenses. This will unlock full functionality on additional vehicles.
2. Professional Version: If you’re a workshop or enthusiast working on multiple vehicles, the IIDTool Pro version supports multiple VINs (but at a higher price).

In summary:

You cannot perform a forced DPF regen on a car that the GAP IIDTool is not licensed to. You would need to either:
• Buy an additional VIN slot for that car,
• Or use another tool that supports that vehicle model without VIN locking (like Autel or Launch tools, depending on your needs).

Thanks Alan. So would I just register the app in my name and it should work, also... would trying to force a regen come under the first or second option?

EDIT, Just seen JonnyCJ's comment. Thanks for the replies guys!

I think Jonny explained things in a lot more detail than I did. He’s quite correct, it will only do basic functions, reading and clearing codes.
If you want to do the more involved stuff, such as DPF regenerations etc, you’d need to pay and have your VIN number added to your friends device and assuming they’ve already registered it, it’ll be tied to their VIN. Changing the account details won’t change that association.

Hope this helps. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
