Rear diff oil

Refernce my post in ' what did you do in your FF ".

No evidence to show my rear diff oil has ever been changed so at 93k , I drained the oil yesterday and was shocked how clean it was.Very tiny amount of fine fillings on the filler plug which is magnetic.
No real way of checking it other than draining it out so seemed a bit of a waste doing it.

Have got the transfer box to do( not the gearbox ) but wondering if that will be just as clean.

Just spotted- I put this in the wrong section !! Mine is an L405 ( 3.0 td )

Mine had never been changed that I could find a record of, so I did both diffs and transfer case at ~80K when I got the car.

Rear was clean, transfer box similarly. Front diff much dirtier. 2012 (L322) 4.4TDV8 Vogue SE, RSE, Fuji White over Arabica.

At that mileage it is a good move to change the oils, lubricating oil has a lifespan like many other parts. Good news that it was clean, now you know that, you have some peace of mind which is priceless. planned preventative maintenance is good practice, helps maintain reliability, and is way cheaper than renewing components. Hope the transfer box oil is just as clean. Thumbs Up

I changed my diff oil yesterday on my L405 5.0SC as there is a leak pointed out at the MOT. She has done 100k and there is nothing in the records to say it had been replaced before. The leak has been there a while as there is quite a lot of old oil and muck underneath.

About 650ml of horrible thick black oil came out. There was nothing too alarming on the magnetic drain.

I filled it until it started to dribble out of the filler and it took about 1 litre. I cleaned it up and put in new filler and drain plugs so I can monitor to see if the leak continues.

The whole job took about half an hour of rolling around on the gravel with the RR suspension on set on high. I could have done it on normal ride height. 2014 5.0 L405 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

I'm not sure about the L405, however, the L322 requires a specific quantity of oil rather then being filled to the level of the fill plug as that is overfilled.

In the workshop manual it specifically states NOT to use the fill plug as a level and it then goes on to state that doing so would cause damage to the diff. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I read the same but checked the online manual from Land Rover and for the rear diff it sates "Fill the rear differential, until a thin thread of fluid runs from the filler hole."

Same for the front diff. 2014 5.0 L405 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4
