2006 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black
Torque Converter Part Number 6HP26X 4.4 V8

I feel I've searched and read all there is to read on this, but apologies if this has been answered somewhere else.

Short version: I'm trying to determine if a torque converter I've bought on Ebay is the right one for my gearbox.

Longer Version: I am, alas, not even in the same hemisphere as Sussex Autos / JPAT / anyone else who can rebuild my TQ, so taking it off and sending it and getting it back would take weeks to months. I figured I would try and find a used one online and ship it to Sussex Autos for a rebuild and then ship it out. I think I have found the right one, but with all the logistics (and cost) involved, I'd be extremely grateful if anyone with more knowledge of these could confirm if I've got the right one (one of those posts you hope someone like RRPhil takes pity on!)

My gearbox "STUEKL" number is 1068 020 051 which is a 6HP26 X on my 2006 4.4 V8 (petrol)

When I look at the ZF Catalogue HERE I see that the torque converter for my transmission is 4168 026 608.

While searching for the part on EBay, I couldn't find one for my specific gearbox. However, I see that the same torque converter appears to be used on some other 6HP26 gearboxes (LR3 4.4) even though the transmission ID is a bit different.

So, when widening the search for a Disco 3 4.4 V8 torque converter, I found this on Ebay

My theory is that the underlined text in the image (4168 026 608) is the part number and as that matches the ZF catalogue part number for my transmission, I should be able to fit it onto my transmission (after Sussex Autos rebuild it).

However, life to date has taught me that things rarely are so straightforward. So, while I am in the returns window on Ebay, can anyone see what I've overlooked in this approach, or why I've ordered a torque converter that won't fit my transmission, please let me know!

RRphil on this forum is the GOD of these gearboxes.

I'm sure he'll be along to help in a bit.

In the meantime you could do worse than look at all his previous posts (search for RRPhil and then go to RRPhil's profile and look at "find all posts by RRPhil".

Your torque converter (4168 026 608) is commonly referred to as the ‘D85’ unit and was used in the Discovery 3 & Range Rover Sport (transmission part nos. 1068 020 044/065/069) as well as the L322 (transmission part nos. 1068 020 051/064/069).

It was used in a large number of RWD Jaguars, too (XJ8, XK8, S-Type, XF & XK) with the 4.2 V8 NA engine.

If they have the same part number, these are all the identical component.

Thank you very much both RRPhil and Dolphinboy!

I take this all to mean that the 4168 026 608 torque converter I bought off Ebay is a D85 unit and will fit my 1068 020 051 box, so I will ask the folks at Suffolk Autos to rebuild it.

Once I've got the rebuilt unit I can swap it out with the failing one on my 1 FF, send it for rebuilding and then swap out the failing one on my other FF!
