There seems to be a lot of mis-information about replacing keys for the L405, so I thought I'd bring what I know to this forum.

The security mod that has been applied by JLR to 2016+ cars involves locking the KVM (Keyless Vehicle Entry Module) to prevent additional keys being added through the OBDII port, which was one of the ways the lower members of society could borrow your car without asking. They could get into the car and get access to the OBD port by relaying the signal from your keys in the house to the car (hence switching off keyless entry, using a faraday pouch or sleeping batteries to help prevent this), then effectively programme a new key to allow them to drive away.

If your car hasn't had the security mod, you can buy a new key from Amazon/eBay etc. for about £20 and programme the new key to your car using the GAP IID tool, or similar, but your car will have this security flaw that means others can do it too.

If your car has had the security mod, access to the KVM via the OBD is blocked. Some people, including GAP, say the only alternative is to replace the KVM to be able to add a new key. JLR say this also, and will say that in 90% of cases replacing the KVM will also require replacing the BCM (Body Control Module). These aren't cheap: KVM - £280 and BCM - £544. Some auto locksmiths are saying the same.

However, a good auto locksmith can add a key using other methods, and it depend on whether you have lost all your keys, or just want to add another. My 2017 car has had the security mod done, and this week I drove to Huddersfield to meet with Paul from PD Auto Locksmiths, who does work for JLR and clearly knows what he's talking about.

I wanted to add another key (one had been lost), and also I didn't have the blade that fits inside the fob which allows you to get into the driver's door by removing the handle cover and accessing the keyway.

Paul confirmed the KVM has been blocked so removed the KVM from the rear nearside panel. This wasn't easy as accessing the bolts that hold it in place is difficult on an Autobiography as the rear aircon gets in the way. Other variants are easier apparently. Once removed, he could take the KVM apart and gain access to the KVM chip on the circuit board to manually re-program it in order to add another key (which he provided). This keyfob looks and feels identical to a genuine JLR one. He then effectively picked the lock in the door handle to get the code of the cut blade and re-cut a new blade. It took about 45 minutes to remove the KVM from the car, 30 minutes to take the KVM apart and re-programme it with the new fob, and 10 minutes to pick the lock and cut a new blade.

For this, I was charged less than £250 (I won't say how much exactly as it is Paul's job to quote how much he charges). I'm not always impressed by people who work on cars and how much they charge often just to replace modules, and often do my own work as a result, but have to say Paul is one of the people I would thoroughly recommend to work on JLR cars if you need keys sorting (he has a 4.8 rating on Google).

A locked KVM can still be done through the OBD with the right kit, my 2017 SVR was done with one of these



I believe you have to have 1 fully functioning key present though.

I’ve just picked up a 2018 RR AB with just one working key and am in Woking, Surrey.

If anyone can recommend a locksmith in the South East, that would be really appreciated.

I have just purchased a 2015 AB with only 1 key so I too would like to know if it is possible to program a new key with GAP IID. Also anyone have a link to a new key as not all are equal. Thanks

Hi Jagbusa definitely possible with the GAP tool, I did it recently and did a write up. You have to contact Patrick at GAP with your vin so he can send you a code. This was all free of charge too.

This is my original post :
As previously mentioned in another post I have successfully added a replacement key to my 2013 L405. I checked on line and couldn't find a clear process for coding a new key to the pre 2016 models.

It involves a little work with the GAP IID BT tool but relatively easy and worth the effort, I was quoted approximately £160 to £240 for a replacement key and managed to get one for £15 on line.

Please remember that this is entirely at your own risk, this is just the process I followed and it worked for me so I cant guarantee that it will be the same for everyone.

1, The very first thing you must do is update your IID tool with the tool updater using the GAP installer, most people will still have this on their desktop, if not it can be downloaded from the Gap website. When the installing has found your tool you click on Programme Firmware.

2 After downloading the latest version release version 4138 plug the tool into the car, you will probably see a red message at the top of the screen advising to update tool info, click on this and then follow the next steps.



3, With the tool in the OBD port follow these instructions :
Menu--ECU Flash--KVM Keyless OR RFA-Keyless ( you will flash the ECU info at this stage )
Menu--ECU info, you must now send the info to GAP ( the page you are on )by clicking on the email button bottom left hand corner, they can only send you the programme flash if you email this page to them and dont screenshot it. Please let them know that you are key coding and want to programme a new key to your car.

4, You will receive an email back from gap to download the file required, at this stage reconnect the tool to your desktop tool updater and update the tool again ( even though you have just already done this you need to do it a second time, once the update has finished now click on Program flash files button only, this will now download to the tool the files to programme your keys(s)

5, You now need to plug the tool back into the car and hit the update tool button again, now you are ready to programme the new key !

Menu--ECU Flash--Keyless Add Key OR RFA-Keyless, just follow the on screen prompts now and make sure you have the new key with you ready to press the required buttons. ( I also kept the 1 already programmed key I have inside the car ).

It may seem long winded but you just follow the simple steps and I would make sure you check the time in Quebec where GAP are based, you want them to be at work when they receive your emails so you get a quicker response. I have to say they were amazing and wrote straight back within minutes !

When did my MY16 L405 which had a locked KVM I went down the DIY route mainly as I wanted genuine keys and the dealer quote was eye watering!

I used a Jaguar KVM (Part# J9C16073) at £95 and then a new JLR Key (Part# LR060128) at £110 followed by SDD (Pat @ GAP confirmed IID couldn’t do it at the time) to update the KVM software (FK72-14C104-AH > FK72-14C104-AR) and then program the original and new keys onto the car, which was around a 20minute process many automated ignition cycles and ending with verification of the keys.

There was allot of reassuring verification including placing the keys around the gear selector and then SDD attempting to turn the ignition on automatically etc. MY17 Santorini Black L494 Autobiography 5.0 SC - Sorry!

I can do them on cars up to 2020
Cars up to 2015 can be done in a couple of minutes. Cars to 2020 are a little more involved. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
