The picture shows the oil filter on the left and power steering fluid on the right, do you know if the leak is from any of them?

It's the oil filter then, there is fluid all around the top of it, as if it isn't screwed on right (! ?) - is this possible ?

Then it's pooling lower down in the enigine compartment and ultimately all over my block paving .... grrrrr

Sorry for being so dumb - never touched a spanner in my life ... 2003 Vogue 4.4

Be careful not to over tighten it

Their is a large o ring in the top of the oil filter housing, check it's seated correctly/not perished.

Also worth checking breathers etc, as blocked ones may over preasurizing the system.

It's good. That means no rust !

It's oil from the oil filter housing. Did you changed the filterelement in the past? Open the oil filter housing, check the large black rubber ring is correct and undamaged, a drop oil around the rubber ring and then close the oil filter housing strong by hand - without a spanner! That will be enough.
Check engine oil , if necessary fill up correctly.

Spray a can brake cleaner into the cold engine compartment, that will clean the desaster...or wait until the next rain.... XJC, RRV8, Series1 86 and 107% of real pleasure

Right - opened the filter housing, rubber ring looks ok - in my limited experience !

Closed it tightly by hand. Started the engine and immediately oil is oozing out all around the top.

Richcl mentioned "breathers" ... is he right - how do i diagnose that problem ! ?

Thanks 2003 Vogue 4.4

It needs to be more than finger tight, best fit a new rubber ring too

buy an oil filter kit , Replace the oil filter , Replace the O rings

Buy a cheap torque wrench and a 36mm socket i believe and torque it up to what is stamped on the plastic top
as NO amount of hand tightning is going to be tight enough then you will know if you really do have a problem im in birmingham outskirts if you was closer i would have done it for u as i have all of the tools (wher bouts are you) onto no6 Range Rover

Thanks Speedy Mark ... I'm near Uttoexeter, however ...

Just checked and when it was last MOT'd in June, the garage (DLS in Matlock) did an oil filter change ... so I'm just about to get on the phone to them.

Thanks for the offer though Very Happy 2003 Vogue 4.4
