Was thinking of a private sale rather than a main dealer.

Other than asking Lookers I think you are limiting your possibilities by asking on here, there isn't enough 4.4s on here yet.

Why would you want to buy one privately? If its this years model surely you wont save that much money buying privately... more than the risk of loosing the lot in a scam? Your a braver man than me my friend...

I am scanning PH and Autotrader.

I am a little concerned about a scam but the dealers seem unrealistic as to price - I was shown a 3.6TDV8 the other day where it is on retention at a dealer - the dealer is offered at £58k. The owner is happy to sell it to me at anything over £52k, as that is more than the dealer will return him.

I've seen another car where it has sat on the dealer's forecourt for over 2 months. The CAP value has dropped in that time from £58k to £52k. He had it offered at £70k originally, now at £68k with a "deal" at £67k. I'm very happy for the dealer to make a margin but more than £10k over trade-in seems a little much.

Main Dealer margins do seem to have increased probably due to poor used sales numbers.

£6250 is a fair Main Dealer margin on a 2010 Vogue SE according to my systems.

My margin would be £4750 as with most smaller Independents.

Hope this helps.

The luxury car market must be a tricky trade to be in. I wouldn't want to fork out on stock that if I couldn't sell after a year I have to loose 10K depreciation on it .
I can understand why they need good margins which must sometimes have to cover losses on poor selling vehicles.

The funny thing is that I spoke to the dealer the day he bought this particular car and he accidentally blurted out what he paid for it. I immediately offered him £2k more than he paid before it even hit the showroom. He turned the deal down and now it has sat on his forecourt for two months, dropping £2k a month while the world drops into recession around him. I don't think he'll sell it to me now on principal. Hey ho.

There is a fair discount to be had on brand new. Obviously you have the depreciation factor, but you do get to personalise it to your exact specification. It worked out for me that I got mine for Autobiography TDV8 'list price' with almost £8000 worth of extras 'free.'

I think I might indeed go this route - £10k off a new one with three years warranty is a better prospect than a one year old one at the offered side of a main dealer.

Also, some run-out deals will be available when the L405 starts to scare away buyers.
