TrailAir system review

Hi All. I went to see a demo of the TrailAir system developed by Land Rover. It is retro-fittable and I've asked the dealer to get it sorted for me.

Full review on the D3 site. http://disco3.co.uk/forum/topic69662-15.html

Please note I am not connected with them, not being paid to advertise, I'm just seriously impressed. A damn fine gadget which is easily justified to SWMBO on safety grounds. Thumbs Up

Dom.

That seems seriously inexpensive for such a comprehensive system. Be interested to see how you get on with it. Graham

Wow, i tow at least thrice a week with various weights off the back [horses] and usually single manned. Eventhough the venture cam is great it is a faf, stick on back - line up trailer - transfer to inside to monitor etc etc.
What i don't understand from the blurb is "coming soon" for FFRR. This is the sort of 'extra' i would pay for immediately. It would make my life a lot easier.

yes, so the "coming soon" bit is because the people at Land Rover who write the installation instructions haven't done the FFRR yet. TBH it is an easy DIY job from what I can tell. The kits are all similar and use the same basic wiring harness. The hardest part is removing the rear bumper to fit the camera.

well i am very impressed with that!! seems like a great idea and to be able to monitor all the tyre pressures and have the hitch cam too.

i could be persuaded to spend some pennies on something like this. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Thanks Dom

I think I would be interested in fitting one to my TD6 when it becomes available

One question tho. From reading their website it would appear as if you have to fit a new sensor when you fit a new tyre .Have I miss read this or is this right.??? Look under Additional tyre sensors

OK, I can answer those 2 I think. Once the instructions are released by LR for the FFRR it will fit all models of L322.
There is a wiring harness which needs to go from the rear view mirror to the rear corner where the control boxes are fitted. Power is picked up in the rear quarter as is the feed from the reversing lamps to activate the camera.

The valves do not have to be renewed every time you have a new tyre but the valves do need to be removed and refitted with new O rings. Wheels corrode, O rings deteriorate and eventually they will leak if not serviced. The batteries are allegedly good for 10 years. At least, that's my understanding.

OK, the final piece of the puzzle then, which brings a question to the world of FFRR owners.

So to those who read the review, I raised a question about the exterior mirrors which have the auto dimming function. That'll be Vogue SE, Supercharged or Autobiography models in the main. They were an option on Vogues and HSE's I believe.

Anyway, the exterior ones are linked to the interior one on the LIN bus it seems, and the interior one controls the dim function. So, by replacing the interior mirror the auto dim function on the exterior mirrors will be lost.

Now, would this be a deal breaker? (Ahem, Stan, could you add a poll please if you'd be so kind.) The question has been asked of me by Alison of TrailAir but rather than guess I thought I'd ask.

So, the question. If you had to lose auto dim on the outside mirrors to have the TrailAir system fitted, would you still buy the system? Y/N

Also, there is the same issue with High Beam Assist. this function does get disabled. Personally I always thought HBA was the answer to a question that nobody ever asked. I understand there is no plan to change this situation. However, there might be a plan to provide the LINbus connection if it were a dealbreaker. A large amount of FFRR's have the electrochromic mirrors, just depends on the amount of TrailAir systems likely to be sold to FFRR owners I guess.

Dom.
