Getting an external hard drive full of movies to play...

Hi,
Any ideas on how to play an external hard drive (WD passport - USB powered) to play through the RSE system.
Planning to use a laptop but surely there are smaller devices that simply process the data and send it to the RCA ports?
Any ideas,
Kind regards,

WD TV player

I have the live version with HDMI output that I have plugged into my TV and it plays virtually every format (everything I've ever thrown at it anyway) from the WD passport drive connected to it, IIRC the basic model has RCA output on.

You'd just need a 12v supply for it

by 12v supply, do you mean an invertor for the power sockets or literally a 12v feed will run it?
Had a good kike at the ones on ebay and they seem great. I guess you can navigate around the different directories on your hard drive using the remote?
This way I can have all the kids films in one place - even driving around the world would not exhaust the supply!!! '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD

Easiest power solution would be an inverter but I'm sure a simple cigar lighter power supply could be made (not sure what voltage they actually run off but its probably 9-12v)

Remote control may be an issue tho as its infra-red so would need LOS from remote to unit or an IR repeater, also if the unit powers off completely it goes through a longer boot sequence when powered up (about 30 seconds vs about 5) so permanent supply may be better, but this may cause battery drain if you forget to put it into standby.

I'm looking at buying my first FF in the next few months (06My SC hopefully) and am also looking at media player integration but wanted more functionality (web, email etc.....) was originally considering this route but now I'm thinking of a Car-PC build based around the soon to be released Raspberry Pi units.

Touchscreen integration would be nice tho which is the biggest hurdle but I have read how somebody fitted a transparent touchscreen layer over the top of the original one, the finger pressure operates both layers so OEM menus work fine but when in aux mode the top layer controls the car PC.

edit: Yes you can navigate dir's via the remote, I have mine set up at home so that each movie file is in a separate folder and with is is a .jpg file of the DVD cover in a certain dimension spec - that way when you open a dir instead of seeing folder/file icons you see a wall of DVD covers.

I have DVD rips and full HD (1080p) Blu-Ray rips on there.

bloody genius - almost always, if you can think of a problem, there is a widget on ebay that can fix...
Another option I am considering is a 32GB microSDHC in my HTC Desire S and then a micro USB - TV out (the red/yellow/white) cables to plumb straight into the RSE sockets - meanwhile charging phone from car power.
Any potential pitfalls?
Thanks for all your help so far...
Bet you are looking forward to getting your hands on a SC...how is the search? '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD

If you use the micro USB to send the RCA Component outs then you cant charge it up unless its a pass through device, IE the power plugs into it as well..

The cable in question
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...0192138008
has an additional power input port and although they claim you can charge whilst streaming, I do not know! '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD

For the price I'd say it's worth a go Smile

For the charging unit make sure it supplies 1000ma as the htc's can take upto about 1200ma without any damage but below 1000ma you will drain it faster than it can be charged. I found this with a 700ma unit when using my wildfire for satnav on long journeys!

Quick question, did the MY 06 SC have rear AUX inputs?

I would imagine it would if it has Rear Seat Entertainment. '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD

!

I give these to our engineers as basic AV source/test device as they'll run from 240/12v and output analogue video & audio or HD HDMI......don't know how much they are now but they were £20-25 and also have IR remote.......great & small, bargain for the price IMO.
