I have just been ringing round local parts dealers for a service kit and some oil for my FFRR TD6.
looking on wiki people say they have used Castol edge 5W-40, this would cost me £114.70.
One shop said to use Comma 5W-40 fully synthetic as it as good at half the price,

i was just wondering what people think

As long as it meets the required specs i dont see why not.

IIRC its something like A3/B3 spec..

Check ebay, there are sometimes 20l drums for about £80-90 on there which work out really cheap as it covers you for 2 services and 2 litres of top up fluid

Nothing wrong with Comma oils, I have the 5W-40 fully synthetic in mine.

That last one says pickup only but im sure a courier for it could be arranged for little money..

Check out what Opie Oils (on the forum) can do you for. IIRC 10 litres for £58 last time out.

I have a TD6 2005 which i had from new and it has 56k on the clock, i decided that now it is out of all warranty i would do a service myself as i am fed up taking back the tools they leave in the engine!!

i got all the parts from Brit parts and the oil from halfords as they had 20% off. I decided that i would also replace the crakcase valve whilst i had it apart rather than just the filter. Started at 2pm on Saturady and finshed at 7pm and that is the first time i had done one, learnt a few lessons on the way and i rekon i could do in half the time next time. I used the post on Wiki as a guide and was indeed very helpful. The most exspensive part was the oil plus i did a engine flush.

I would like to flush, but what does one use to flush with, a different type of oil? I wouldn't do it every time but think it might be worth it every 25K or so? .

I use Unipart 5W40 fully synthetic, i believe it to be re-badged Fuchs TITAN Supersyn. It meets all BMW, VW & Audi specs and at around £20 for 5 litres why use anything else.

I'm never convinced of flushing, it could loosen a well stuck but of sludge and then clog the filter bit by bit or even worse, the pump if it was bad enough...

Regular oil changes will eliminate the need for flushing

The oil for a4.4 TDV8 is 5w-30 but meeting specification WSS-M2C934-B, no one seems to have such oil, is this LR being clever. letters not necessarily in the right order

Noticed in ASDA today that they are selling A3/B3 spec castrol for £10..... That's for the big tub.. 4 or 5 litres. Previously..
