A couple of months back the car intermittently started to take longer to fire, then 6 weeks ago the car just cut out whilst driving along. No coughing or spluttering.... it just died with the error message fuel rail pressure.

After the RAC man bled the fuel lines the car started again. We got the car recovered to our local garage (not our first choice, but circumstance dictates), and after a day or two they were clueless as to what the fault might be. They said they had checked the injectors and all were fine, they checked fuel pressures and the LP pressure was a little lower than expected, but they would not commit to a course of action. I instructed them to replace the the secondary fuel pump (not much labour and relatively cheap part that is known to fail).

All seemed well until a couple of days ago when the wife reported the starting issue again. A few hours later it dies agian. Another call to the RAC to get it going and back to the garage.

They are still being totaly non committal. They basically have no idea what the problem is, but I'm away from home so the car is going to have to stay there for them repair.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this. The only ideas I have now are the fuel pump in the tank, the pump relay or the regulator.

Any help gratefully received.

Have they checked the in tank filter( if there is one) and if that is the pump thats a tiny bit below pressure i'd maybe go with that or ask for it to go to a local specialist instead of a general garage.

What happens if they 'prime' the system a few times before trying to crank?
IE turn to RUN position and not start and then turn to OFF and repeat 2 more times. If the door is open and its quiet outside you should here the LP Pump in the tank kick in each time.

Hi Chris, are you sure they have tested the injectors?
I would say it's most likely to be a faulty injector,if the injector leaks it will cause low fuel pressure and your car won't start.
the only other thing is to replace the external fuel pump.

just a thought have you fitted a new fuel filter?

The secondary fuel pump is prone to giving problems on the TD6, worth checking it out

Check your battery connections! I had exactly this..... wouldn't start at all then whilst driving along, lost all power and engine. Turned out it was a loose connection to the neg pole in the battery dept. Tightened them both up and no probs since!

The secondary pump has been done, so I can rule that out. I haven't discounted the filter, but don't expect this to be the cause of such a sudden failure..... will probably replace anyway as they are only about 15 quid. Likewise the relay is about a fiver so this will also probably just get replaced, but I was trying to avoid blindly changing parts.

Until I know the cause, I have very little faith in the car. Maybe time for a trade up?

I had a similar issue changed the secondary fuel pump worked fine for a few days then died again turn off turn on worked fine for few days then died again any how this went on for around 2 weeks then 1 day i thouoght i would check fuel pump when i touched the pump the car died restarted touched pump connector car died turned out that when the plug had been removed it had stretched the metal connectors within the plug removed plug cover reset contacts never had another problem again

some one else on here had a similar problem a while back, it turned out to be the relay/ connections in the ecu box under the bonnet.

Get it booked in at a decent local LR independent and get the RAC to come and collect it. Obviously it's above local garage's capabilities and to be fair to them they won't have Autologic diagnostic or vast experience of LRs like a good indy. It's what I'd do or you'll just end up throwing money at it needlessly.

This sounds exactly like what happened to ours and it drove me mad! You need to have a look at the clear pipe coming off the fuel filter to the engine when it's either not starting or stopped, it's easy to do and not messy, if it's got either no fuel in it or lots of air bubbles then I bet it's the pump in the tank, our local Landrover dealer denied their even been such a thing but after changing the secondary pump and the car stopping again after having it back 1 day, they took it back in and called me saying their was such a pump in the tank after me telling them for over a week!! Anyway it's been changed and all fine now, but the symptoms were the same as yours. Hope this helps

Problem solved....... apparently. I'm told the fuel pump relay was corroded/burnt. Lets hope this is the end of it.

Hate to say I told you but take it to a LR specialist. Been down this road myself albeit with a Merc. Sometimes got to bite the bullet and get a specialist on it whether it be building work, fixing a boiler or fixing a car. Just end up throwing money away using someone with basic knowledge of a lot of different things or manufacturers.
