Over sized tyres

Anybody got them?

I really like the look but I'm not sure what they're like to live with and how big you can go before they become a PITA.

This is the sort of thing I mean...

Anybody done it and would care to comment?

I've got big tyres on my Jeep and wouldn't do it on my FFRR. If you want to try, 31" is about the limit, there's some info here.

I like the look, but in practice, they are noisy and depending on the tread pattern, can offer significantly less grip in certain conditions. my Jeep has 33" BF Goodridge MT's and whilst fantastic in mud, they are a nightmare on wet tarmac. I can live with that for my toy, but not for an everyday car.

You won't be able to fit a spare of the same diameter into the regular space, so you'll either need to go without or lose a good chunk of your boot.

Don't forget to declare it as a modification to your insurance company.

IMHO they'd ruin a FFRR - if you want to play in the mud, buy a Defender or Jeep. A FFRR is about comfort with something in reserve.

I have a set of 275/55/20 cooper ltz that are at the limit for the 20' rim. They are quite noisy, constant drone, reminds me of an old 110 I used to run about in.to be honest, this is probably due to buying a set from another forum member, whilst excellent condition, I'm led to believe that they don't make too much noise from brand new on the same car. Plus they are axle sensitive, so they have to go back on the same axle they came off to stop the noise. Fitment wise, had to modify o/s rear wheel arch liner for clearance, were talking ball hair clearance at the front as well. Not been off road with them, very tempted mind, but main worry is lack of clearance which would possibly be a big issue when axles articulate, would hate to cause damage just because of tyre choice, I'll fire some pics up later as they are off the car just now, they actually make my 22's look too small!

Don't forget that your gearing (and speedo) will be affected too. On my Jeep I changed the diff gearing when I put lockers in, but it makes a difference.

Now that's what I'm talking about.

Any regrets or would you do it again?

To be honest they were £400 the lot, so aye, definitely do it again. Regrets, yes & no, at that price was foolish not to get them, speedo seemed almost no different, although never checked with a satnav , compared with the 22's, never had to worry about kerbing, although they do drone like feck, wouldn't if I had from brand new though .if you're ever over the east coast, more than welcome for a trial fit, they are right heavy bastids though !
