United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Zermatt Silver
Any ICE experts?

I have an HSE with no satnav and I want to fit a full non-OEM double-DIN satnav/iPhone/all singing all dancing system (you get the idea). I'm looking mainly at Kenwood, Alpine and Pioneer, although if anyone can recommend another make, great.

What I want must be compatible with the steering wheel buttons and must be iPhone compatible (not just iPod). Ideally, it should also be compatible with the OBC functions (clock, trip computer, etc) and I want it to look close to OEM.

Car is a 2003 V8 HSE. Owner is an electronics numpty and budget is (within reason) whatever it takes.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Thanks. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

Alpine have interfaces that connect to the car's inbuilt remote controls and displays, and were one of the first (if not the first) aftermarket audio company that had official Apple connections for the iPod and iPhone.

I wonder whether you may be better off getting one of the aftermarket box of tricks? Basically, they're units that keep the front end of the standard system (touchscreen, steering wheel controls etc) but 'steal' the audio output into a separate box. To this box, you can attach amps, speakers, TVs, you name it.

I'm not current with the latest models but last time I checked, JBL and Alpine did such boxes and were pretty highly regarded.

If you choose a unit with iPod connectivity and bluetooth, the phone will see it as two different devices, allowing music out of the iPod connector, and phone calls out of the bluetooth. Researching my first Range Rover purchase

Thanks. What I'm concerned about is phone interference over the speakers (you know, the chirrup noise). Also, I don't have a touchscreen currently (no built-in nav) so it would have to be an entirely new system. If Alpine is fully compatible, that may be the way forward. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

Thanks for the info.

So far, the main contender seems to be the Alpine INE-S900R although it would appear that most makes are capable of operating using the steering wheel buttons.

The only issue now is how to retain the full operation of the MID display on the instrument panel. If the current system is removed, there is no way to reset the clock (for example). I found a solution here:

http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=37537

... although whether an installer would be prepared to have a crack at it is anyone's guess.

Are there any systems which allow the same control of the MID (fuel economy/times/etc.)? 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

Not a finished (production) system, AFAIK. It can be done with a carputer - check out MP3car.com and search under BMW. There's quite a bit of info there.

You're not interested in retrofitting OEM I assume...

Preferably not. I don't suppose the wiring harnesses are fitted anyway so should probably go from scratch. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

Now sorted.

Ordering a Kenwood DNX5260BT. It's compatible with the steering wheel switches and they will relocate and rewire the MID controller to the back of the glovebox in place of the CD changer so the OBC continues to work. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

As the car is a long-term keeper, I thought "what the hell". Cool

The fitters will have it for three days as it's a dashboard out job. They will refit the OBC in the glovebox where the CD changer used to be and will make the fitting look permanent. I'll put some photos up when it's done. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

The bad news is that fitting almost doubled the cost! Big Cry

The good news is the system is absolutely brilliant. iPhone control (it lives in the glovebox), hands-free phone is as clear as a bell, music control is brilliant, satnav is Garmin with TMC, the steering wheel volume and track controls work, it looks OEM and the OBC is now fitted in the glovebox where the CD changer used to be. Photos to follow.

In terms of electronics, Kenwood/BMW interfaces work fine as the car is effectively an X5 with a bodykit. Embarassed

If you can, get one. Thumbs Up 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster
