Is it having trouble starting?

I only ask because a lot of people think they are like spark plugs, and are a service item. They are not. They only need replacing when they fail.

Regards, Luke

If you take the top engine cover off and possably need to take the top part of the inlet manifold off you will see them on the top of the head. Be warned use plenty of wd40 as they ceize in nicely as some previous mechanic found out on mine and snapped no 1 glow plug off flush with the head Big Cry now I only have 5 heater plugs working but it has never failed to start have you checked the glow plug relay can you hear it click off after about 20-30 seconds after you turn the ignition on I would check that first as changing the plugs is not a job for the faint hearted

Thanks for that but I've checked all wiring, relays etc got a new battery also so I'm pretty sure it's the glow plugs

When yours does start is it very smokey unburnt fuel as mine was slow to start and I found it to be the input fuel pipe on the high pressure fuel pump. ( hence the reason I know where the heater plugs are )

Could be something to do with the fuel don't know to much about bio but used to run vans and disco's on veg oil and they would take a lot of cranking when cold as the fuel thickens up. Normally if there is a glow plug issue when it does start it would smoke and the fumes will smell of unburnt fuel.

You could be experiencing waxing with the fuel as while some places and suppliers say they put winteriser in, they often dont to cut costs. Stick 20litres of dino in to about 1/4-1/2 a tank and see if it helps.

Also after the glowplug light goes out give it another few seconds as this gets the secondary pump enough chance to pump the thicker fuel.

If you do replace the plugs i think bosch do some duraterm ones for the M57 engine. They are well worth the money and used in BioD circles as they are double wound for extra heat Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

The high pressure fuel pump is on the engine as you look at it from the front it's on the right hand side under the plastic cover. Mine was leaking fuel from there so I could smell the fuel when the engine was hot.

you only need to remove the inlet manifold to get to the glow plugs. a little tip though if you try to remove the glow plugs with a cold engine you will most likely break one in the head, once the manifold is off start the engine and leave it to idle until its up to temp then you will find with a some help from some wd they will all come out.
