TD6 2002 wont start

Hi All first post and as usual its a cry for help Bow down

I have 2002 td6 and it has developed a problem put the key to position 1 and a whole load of the electrics pulse on/off try to crank and you sometimes get a slight click but that's it!

The battery is good and fully charged (my first thought) , then i did a bit of research on this site (and others Whistle) & it would appear there were a few possibility's

1. starter motor, I had one of these so thought i would just swop this over and then i can eliminate this as a possibility. done and no change

2. Ignition switch, is there any way of testing this? method etc

3. Gearbox position inhibitor switch so have tried in neutral, park shake it all about, no change

is there anything that could be inhibiting the system?

i have taken what is probably not a very good video of the symptoms so you can see whats occurring see this link http://s153.photobucket.com/user/Batpooh/library/Strange%20Rover

any help and advice would be really welcome and thank you in advance

Stuart

That's a good way of describing the problem - with a video.

Sorry - I don't have an answer though. I suspect someone else will soon.

To eliminate gear selector cable stiffness / corrosion holding off the gearbox inhibitor switch I would be inclined to lubricate the cable as per the link below,

Video is very useful, you may have started something. Thumbs Up

Video very handy.

The clicking relay is the glow plug relay. This is unlikely to be the problem, unless if it fails it causes these symptoms (but I do not believe that would happen - the car should just turn over and not start if the glow plug relay packed up - or take longer to start - see my thread on this).

Have you tried battery disconnection procedure and do as above and ensure gear lever linkage is working OK.

Any diagnostic tools available for fault codes? .

Easiest thing to do is unplug it and see what happens?
( I have not tried this, do not know what it might do) .

Could it be a bad earth? Try putting a jump lead from the negative on the battery to the engine. '04 td6 se

Sorry for the delay,

no not a bad earth

unfortunately still no go and the battery's flat now Censored haven't had a chance to work on it this week but it appears to have discharged a fully charged battery in 7 days.

I have a fluke multi meter that can measure DC Current up to 10A what sort of draw would I expect with the car locked and just sitting there?

cheers for your help guys

Stuart

When you first lock the car you could see 6-7A being drawn from the battery, possibly slightly more of the FBH has been running whilst it goes thro its purge cycle.
After about 30s the current drain should drop significantly to about1-2A.
After that the current drain drops off slowly as each ECU shuts down, after about 10minutes you should be reading below 1A.
Your car should ultimately settle to about 40mA after it has gone fully to sleep.
If the readings show above this it tends to indicate a current drain which shouldn't be there.
Have you considered the "pulsing" is caused by a bad connection.?

Still think its a bad connection somewhere. If you look at the instrument panel the only light thats flashing is the oil light which points the problem towards the engine side of things in my opinion. The relay thats ticking in the engine compartment is the glowplug relay which draws quite a bit of current. Double check all your main earth and power cables for good connections. Check the main fuses by pulling them out and checking their terminals are clean etc. Remember to disconnect the battery first though. If it were the ignition switch then i would imagine all the warning lights would be flashing???? Good luck Thumbs Up '04 td6 se

Try this,

find a diesel car to give you a jump start but leave the leads on from it for about 10minutes before you try and crank yours over as it will need that time to bring it up.

Even if the battery is showing as good it could be just poor enough for the car to kick up a fuss.

It'll take a few minutes to test and is worth the effort Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
