DVD Changer 'Mecha Error' - Solved.

Had my FF for a few days now and I've noticed the DVD changer has yet to play anything .... The original problem I had was unit appeared dead and wouldnt eject the cartridge after going into the TV menu and changing to DVD it then ejected .... Tried loading the cart up with disks but still wont work, sometimes struggles to eject sometimes comes up with mecha error.

Question is when I put the cart in you can see the carrier go down then stop, my instinct is its not going down far enough as I would assume the next step is pull each drawer out to check what is in it. Could someone please check if this is how it works for me?

Maybe something is stopping it going all the way down but at the moment the cart is stuck again and its raining so I've given up.

Thanks.

Had a go at fixing it today and got success!

Hardest part was taking the DVD changer out as you need to move the RSE unit out of the way but once it was out I just stripped it down, worked the gears a few times then sprayed some silicone lubricant onto the gears and reinstalled.

Now works fine.

Thumbs Up It's a good feeling when you get something working again... Notice your original post was last year, must have missed that one. Very unusual not to get any replies to a request like that? Previously..

Yea to be honest I've posted in a few threads about it but found nothing to suggest anyone has tried stripping it down, there are plenty of repair agents out there but I thought I'd have a go as you still need to remove the unit yourself.

For anyone with similar 'Mecha Error' fault have a go at lubing and moving the gears, unfortunately tho you will probably need to remove the unit as you cant get to the big top gear (the one that pulls the trays out) while it is in place - my gut instinct is the motor that drives the unit was either in a 'dead spot' or just slightly jammed.

Tip:- attach a magnet to your screwdriver / socket as I nearly lost a few and you don't want loose screws rattling around near all those electrical units.

Procedure for removal is in the Topix .PDF

Only my FBH to fix now, hopefully I'll get away with just cleaning/replacing the glow plug / flame sensor - then come winter my work colleagues will have 1 more reason to hate me when I get in a nice pre-heated car after a 12 hr night shift Whistle

Encountered the same problem with my RSE DVD - "MECHA ERROR".

When I saw the 4 figure cost of a replacement I nearly threw-up.

Took it apart and silicone sprayed the moving parts - being careful to avoid the laser lens.

Obligatorily dropped my nuts in the recess and fished them out with my magnetic flexible torch thingy

- and whoo-hoo it works!

Thanks for the advice Katash. Thumbs Up

I got the Mecha Error across the Christmas break with my DVD. Finally got around to removing the DVD unit from rear of car and then removed the covering box off the player. Easy to see how it works but once I tweaked the mechanism a bit and refitted to the car harness, powered it up and now it ejects.

So I really don't know what the cause of the fault is. I will take your collective learned advice here and get some silicone spray to lube the big gear and other sliding surfaces. My guess is that the mechanism hit an 'on centre' condition and as lube is very old, it wasn't sliding as well as a operative unit and hence it 'stuck' still.

My car was owned by a single guy and I think it was only used once or twice in the whole 7 years since the car was built.

Thanks for advice here.

I finally got the time to take out the dvd changer, opened it, lubed all moving parts, put everything back together and it works as a charm Thumbs Up 2010MY TDV8 Vogue Nara bronze / Arabica, Ivory. VW Amarok 2013 180 auto
