Anyone got / had a Mini ?

My daughter passed her driving test last week, and is wanting a Mini. I'm probably looking at one round 10 years old. Any issues I should know about Whistle

Mine was a LOT older and my mum and sister had one as well at the time. We're talking about pre BMW minis here, brilliant cars. On the newer models no clue, sorry. They look cool but are supposedly quite harsh i.e. stiff suspension. My wife went on a big road trip with her cousin a few years ago and that is what she remembers about the car. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

The o2/03 cars had a few teething problems. We looked at them around 10-12 years back and we had a couple of test drives that didn't go well. 05 onwards were said to be much better Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Gearbox issues affect the One and Cooper prior to 2004. So if you are going pre 2004 make it a Cooper S which is much more fun anyway!

I was thinking the 'Cooper S' myself, but would it really be suitable for my 17 year old daughter who only passed her test last week Big Cry

How the heck would a seventeen yr old insure it? I would think a 17yr old would pay £5 or £6k Shocked Shocked Shocked

My wifes car with daughter as named driver - £1200 for a 'Cooper S' and round £850 for a 'ONE'

My wife would actually use the car for 80% of the time, with only occasional use from daughter and myself.

What you (well all poor parents with kids that start driving) is a little gadget that changes the mapping of the Motor Management ECU. When you drive it, it is full horsepower and when wife or daughter drive it, it is limited including top speed limits etc. It can be linked to the key (there are already cars out there that have that). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

@Johnte

Yes, we've got a 2005 model Cooper next to the FFRR... One issue so far which was created by a ring or something suffering from corrosion which made it harder and harder to shift to 5th gear. In the end needed both hands to shift from 4 to 5th gear. Was repaired at the dealer for about 200 Euro including labor and shifted gears as new again.

Other then that a really enjoyable 2nd car!!

We bought it like 3 years ago with 90000 KM and currently hitting close to 130000.

Upcoming expected costs is exhaust replacement since the outside of the muffler has been damaged by corrosion. That has been the case for the last 2 years and the inner part is still one piece without leaks so it makes it through the yearly inspections.

I'm sure you are going to enjoy it... Of course your daughter as well Laughing Mike.

Another quick point! How is your wife's back? If she suffers at all i would say, be careful sir (think they used concrete in the dampers!) Rolling Eyes

Back's OK at the moment Laughing

But in all seriousness, as much as I would like a Cooper 'S' as a second car, I'm thinking it may be a bit much for a 17 year old, or is that me been over protective..

I did as another option, put the number of my old TD6 into the insurance comparison site to see what it came up with for a 17 year old with 1 weeks driving experience - I was rather surprised at the results Confused
