United Kingdom 2002 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Tangiers Orange

In a nutshell : sold my '08 3.6L to buy a '10 5.0L, sold the diesel in a flash (3 days for asked price), confirm purchase of the 5.0L... then the seller pulls out as he now wants to keep it!!

Gutted

Search for a tidy 5.0L for 6/7 months, cant find one I like (ie : not green or beige), then see a fully loaded Orney on Jet 4.4L TDV8 Vogue with full 24 Months warranty. Buy it: superb engine and that Gbox... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

3 weeks later, a 2011 Autobiography 5.0L Supercharged shows up for sale, 58.000 miles, FLRH, for less money than the Diesel, black on black, with Design pack (not my favorite but still)... Gutted again!

Love my 4.4L TDV8, superb engine, but still not a fantastic as the 5.0L

Now guess what, I am looking for a non L322 V8 toy... I would not have if I had the 5.0L L322: this would have turned out a much cheaper option in the end!

That is the point at where this conversation at work started. It began with a simple how are you finding the rangey and went through a colleague wanting to cut down to one car from a thoroughbred 4wd (landcruiser 4.2 TD) and a Porsche Boxster.

He sights the the tax, fuel and overall running as major factors and also reasons to go for the V8, "on average the SC saves you £5k and thats a lot of petrol"... Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

For me the Petrol cars are just more fun to own and there is much less general background torsional vibration that I am sensitive too on long trips in a diesel.

Very smooth, very powerful, less to go wrong and cheaper at the dealer and the pumps. 5.0 will always get my vote Thumbs Up

I had a 4.2S/C and went to a TDV8.

My reason was that I spent half my life in petrol stations filling the thing. Other cars would come, fill, pay and go while it continued to gulp down the unleaded.

The TDV8 meant I only had to visit about half as often.

The torque meant it was as quick in most situations and the V8 was smooth and quiet enough that you don't notice it is a diesel 99% of the time.

I agree I love the M5 but on a long trip you are constantly stopping for fuel every 200 miles and after the 3rd time it starts getting a bit boring, I can get 600 miles out of the 4.4 so after doing that it is nice to stop for a minute and refuel yourself. I don't notice any diesel noise and if you push the pedal it jumps into action with no delay, I don't think in the real world you could go much faster than the TDV8 goes in a FFRR unless you had a death wish or a Teflon licence Very Happy

He is taking a 5.0 for a test in the morning, private Indy but sounds a nice car. 11 plate with 42k and full LR history. The same Indy has a 12 plate D4 with the 3.0 SDV6 so he's testing that too....they are the same price apparently ! Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Running costs for me are not an issue, I have 6 vehicles including both petrol and diesel Range Rovers, I would still go for the 4.4 TDV8, the torque is immense, and she just doesn't run out of steam - even when towing. Petrol is nice - but I get bored standing in garage forecourts and queing with the great unwashed to pay. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

I'd vote petrol.
Over here, petrol running costs are probably similar to diesel costs in the UK (sorry, wasn't my idea). So, JLR never offered to sell a diesel here since they returned to North America in the late 80s. So they didn't think any of the Land Rover Diesel engines were worth putting up with here from the 200Tdi to the 4.4TDV8 L322. They are only now going to finally bring in a diesel. So, if mileage isn't a concern, petrol.

I have a petrol, and I often cross into the US to fill up as it's much cheaper. Therefore, I like a car with a long fuel range! I find I'm already ready to go shopping by the time the car needs fuel. On a long motorway journey, by the fuel I need to stop for fuel, there are many other good reasons to stop and get out of the car for a few minutes.

I have driven both and calibrated both, i prefer the TDV8 over the Petrol V8 for everyday use. The TdV8 tuned is a monster and is more than capable of giving the 5.0 SC a run for its money (low down). I have found the only difference tends to be top speed the 5L.

The 5L's are lovely to drive and make a amazing noise as standard, where as you would have to tweak with the exhaust on the V8 to get the desired noise (if thats what you want)

So to summarize Smile if its out right speed you want get the 5.0L if its a absolute torque monster then its got to be the 4.4 TDV8.

5.0 S/C all the way. The 4.4 TDV8 is a blindingly good engine, no doubt, and the 8 speed box is very nice because it keeps it in the torque band all the time when you want it to go.

But, the 6 speed box is not a downgrade in the petrol simply because petrol engines rev more freely and have a much wider power band than diesel. Remember, diesels have torque from 1200RPM so the extra tall gearing would make the petrol a bit lacking in torque. I had a Merc E500 estate with a 7 speed box and every time you wanted to overtake on the motorway the damn thing had to take 2 gears to give the acceleration needed. Too many gears can be a bad thing sometimes.

I drove both just yesterday, one after the other (twice in fact) as I have to change mine for technical reasons. And guess what.....I still chose the petrol engine. It's lighter, free revving, better throttle response and no greasy mess when filling up. No gloves, rags or diesel on shoes ready to transfer to the carpets. Sadly our village garage with attended service closed a year or two back Sad

Yes I've had diesel before and it was fine but given the choice I'd have petrol every time. Mine is a 2nd car for evenings, weekends and towing the caravan. My work hack is a Skoda Superb - never pitch up at work in a decent car if (like me) you're a contractor Wink

Fuel consumption really isn't an issue for me but there is a difference. Yesterday the 'Charger was giving me 22 on the test drives whereas the TDV8 was 29. That's about 30% extra fuel for the same miles in the 'Charger. All the stuff about mid to high 20's in the petrol is only achievable if you drive Miss Daisy. My test drives were real world, mixed driving and making reasonable progress. I don't doubt that the diesel would give more if driven gently though but life's too short to pootle around everywhere.
