Check your CV gaiter clips

So, a while back I noticed grease flicked out onto my NSF wheel arch liner, and it was only a few days old at best (as I am very eagle eyed about these things).

The NSF CV gaiter clip had come loose, local garage looked it over and refitted it, checked the grease levels etc.

Car was in for an MOT today and it failed as that same clip had snapped, was still in situ but wasn't salvageable.

So, they put on a jubilee clip, passed the MOT, didn't charge me and then showed me the old clip.

These clips are rubbish, they look like a metal zip tie with holes in that are clamped together.

The moral of the story - just cos it's been fitted by Land Rover doesn't mean it's great. Jubilee clips rarely fail.

A simple jubilee clip for a few pence could literally save you hundreds of pounds, imagine if the CV joint dried up or got dirt in and it ruined it. Why let it happen? Discovery 4 HSE

Those punched metal straps can be hit and mis, most last for years but you get some that just don't seal properly. They only have to get a slight bash from something and they can fall apart. They're also awkward to refit without the special pliers.

One drawback with a jubilee clip is the big lump with the screw is going to make it unbalanced. Not going to be enough to feel it but it could be enough for the screw part to get shaken apart.

Plastic cable ties last really well, I used some stainless steel cable ties on my mini they're really good. Both are much easier to fit than those awful metal straps that come front the factory.
