Exploding sunroof

Hello everyone

Does anyone have experience of a shattering sunroof? I had a new one fitted a week ago and came down to the car today to find it in a dome shape with glass around the car. Just called dealer who will let me know if they can replace.

It's a 2011 RR AB

Mmmmmm that is the first time I ever heard of it on the forum. My guess is the following :

1. The glass had a manufacturing issue, i.e. extra tension and it shattered due to temperature or something like that.
2. It wasn't installed properly and the tension caused by that made it shatter (again maybe helped by temperature)
3. Something landed on it with sufficient force to break it (rock, brick etc.) No sign of a break-in ?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Never heard of it happening before, but sound a little suspicious if you only had a new one fitted last week.

I had that once in 1997 with a brand new Discovery V8 - we were sitting just a few metres away when the sunroof shattered - it hadn't been hit by anything. It was in the morning, in strong sunshine, and I think it must have been installed pre-stressed and a little thermal expansion was enough to cause it to fail.

The roof lifted from the inside and shattered outwards - I can see it may have been the heat from the sun.

ouch - not quite the same as a sunroof but I had to get all our velux windows replaced this year as one of them did exactly this - fitter said it was a big problem with a particular size and age of window, he said it tended to be higher temps that caused them to pop (hard to believe as its not exactly been hot and sunny up here). All credit to velux they replaced 6 without any issue. Three guys in 2 vans drove all the way from the midlands and were heading for Aberdeen after me - must be costing velux a small fortune.

Sorry to hear that. I must say that this is the first time I've ever had this happen in 33 years of motoring.

Still waiting to hear from garage to see if they will replace free of charge - its only been in the car for 7 days!

Roy,

As a matter of interest, why did you need to replace the original sunroof?

WOW!

I have had my sunroof in and out about 15 times, it's only held in position by 6 torx screws and they have a fair ammount of adjustment in them for adjusting the gap of the seal and getting the glass flush. It's plausible that the fitter of your sunroof did so is the open position and perhaps that led to tension in the fame once it was closed? Absolutely no idea, purely speculating. I have never heard of, nor have I seen that happen before.

I think this is related...
A few years back I was networking some kit in an asda before it opened. The oven chap had just installed a new oven for the rotisserie dept. They were doing a test cook of some chickens when there was an almighty bang and we were quite literally showered in glass. The engineer told me it was not that unusual !! He said that when the glass is installed in the doors if it is put in too tightly or the fixings are pressing onto the glass unevenly that when it was exposed to a high temperature the stress on the glass was too much and it just popped. It really was a hell of a bang when it went. Previously..

Hi Roystonh

Thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn of the concern with your vehicle.

As I note that you have recently had the sunroof replaced, I would be grateful if you are able to confirm if this was completed by a Land Rover retailer or an independent repairer as this is not clear from your post.

If the work was completed by a Land Rover approved retailer, I would be happy to assist you in speaking to them regarding this.

Regards

Again not a sunroof but I've had a toughened glass safety panel around an escalator shatter, turned out to be a microscopic bubble in the glass & temperature fluctuation made it pop. 2011 (MY12) 4.4 TDV8 Vogue

We were on holiday a couple of weeks ago and the glass washbasin in our bathroom shattered for 'no reason' according to the kids at home.
Wife was telling someone at work who said the exact same thing had happened in her house, apparently there are lots of reports on the internet of toughened glass just shattering for no reason.!

Hi Ryan

It was fitted by LR dealer who put a new one in when they reaprayed the roof as the paint was peeling off.

All fixed by dealer under repair warranty although they would not accept responsibility and it was without prejudice. They think it had been shattered by a bird dropping a stone on it.... But it was parked in my car port and the sunroof was rather low in the hole so I think it was caused by tension.

Any way - all done now, but the sun blind rattles when it is fully open - they had the car for two weeks for the repair and I couldn't be bothered to send it back again so they will deal with that when it goes in for the next service.

This car appears to be quite and adventure - and I was given a nice new jaguar to use so I'm not complaining. 2005 L322 Vogue Gold gone
