TDV8 Engine

As some of you will beware I recently purchased a 2007 tdv8 Range Rover with a Top end rattle, which looks to be a small end Bearing. I may get lucky and find it’s a cam shaft/valve gear issue, until the unit is out and stripped I won’t know for sure.

It’s a good spec SE with good service history and a nice history in very good condition so its worth repairing.
What I want to achieve is a TDV8 that should be good for another 100k miles with no real worries or concerns.

That to me means:

New EGR valves
Rebuilt Turbo’s
Checked/rebuilt injectors.
Checked Cylinder heads.
Rebuilt/checked bottom end.

The preference would be source a reputable exchange unit but that where the issues start..

I can likely rebuild the current unit with “sourced parts” but that will take time and add complication.

So can anyone on here actually recommend and good engine shop?
Sadly the Land rover service exchange unit are prohibitively expensive or I would have just bought one.

So any recommendations for a rebuilt engine or parts would be appreciated.

Mark,

thanks for the reply, yes I have and them along with the Glasgow company both seem to have poor reviews from what I can see, hence my preference is a personal recommendation.

Have you thought about asking a place like this to just give you a price for a straight swap if you turn up with the old engine as it must surely be a lot cheaper for them to do it this way?

It is indeed but if you can get the cost knocked down a load more for just a straight swap on the engine it could work out good. or maybe just see if they have 2 heads available and do that. Crank bearings are on the bay as well for £400 which is another good sign as they never used to be publicly available items or even to smaller business's. The E bay mob don't have any Engines in stock and the listing is indicative cost, when you talk to them the figures get much higher.

Bearings, Rods, Pistons are all available and the Top end parts are available from Land Rove a timing pin kit has been sourced so. time to pull it out and see what went wrong with it

Good man Smile

I had a feeling that may be the case with those type of places and that the price would 'rapidly double' overnight to keep them going.

Do us a favour please and start a new thread detailing the bits that have been done so far, the initial and still occurring symptom and then loads of pics as you go along as the 3.6 TDV8 is now entering the realms of us home mechanics who will want to try such things in the future.
The cam chain is of notable importance as whilst its meant to be for life they always wear so worth noting down what they look like with all the crud removed Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
