has anyone rebuilt their compressor (06my)

Occasionally i get the"suspension fault normal height only" message up on the display. I cured a similar fault on my 04 car by replacing the compressor. I have seen compressor overhaul kits available for a fraction of the cost of a full unit on ebay but wondered if anyone had any experience of these kits
Mine looks like the later hitachi unit although it doesnt match any part numbers in the ebay ad?

I am going to contact the seller to check compatibility

BagpipeAndy is the original maker of the kits, he is a lovely bloke and will sort you out and answer any questions you have, all the others are selling his stuff or copied it....

May as well go to the organ grinder as the monkey...!!!

I thought he was doing both, maybe wrong.... send him a message, or just get a kit from that other place..

Did mine (the earlier one) last year and it returned to as new spec so it does seem to be just the piston ring that suffers.

Don't bother with the drying medium, just take yours apart and stick it in the oven for 20mins... but really it's not needed, the compressor passes the outgoing air back through the medium to dry out any moisture that was drawn in when filling so it's usually bone dry anyway.... (unless your FF is under water when the pump cuts in, but that's another story...!!!) Pete

Iirc no one has made one for the later unit as it uses a proper piston like one from an actual engine!

I've disambled mine after it failed and the con rod had broken so you are welcome to it for a few quid and postage as it was decently stein before it failed and had no warnings. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I did the Wabco compressor on my D2. In my case the bore was also shot, but fortunately I had a second compressor with a burned out motor.
Swapping all the bits about to get a single working unit was child's play.

The guides available to do the job make it really easy.

The link in my first post lists a kit for the later hitachi unit used in 06my onwards and d3/rrs. I have sent them an email to check the part numbers and will order one if they are correct. I have got several used compressors from d3/rrs so if they are the same i will have plenty of spares Thumbs Up

Just managed to get the first link to work, and it all looks to have the right bits from what i know from the one I've dis-assembled.

I wonder if it makes any mention of cleaning the bore out and using a dry grease of some sort for better lubrication and on the crank/conrod end so as to ensure a longer life and less heat build up as there isn't anything i could see to lubricate the one i stripped... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Re: has anyone rebuilt their compressor (06my)

I bought and fitted this kit from these same guys. Works fine, and their videos are very useful, in combination with the wiki help on here… Getting the ring off the piston was probably the biggest difficulty. That and the supplied nut and bolt to rebuild the filter matrix was too short.

Good luck..., very difficult to rebuild, believe me, had orderd some kits for the Hitachi, and no one of the Hitachi´s had full power afterwards, only the solution from Andy for the old Wabco one´s will help for one or two years, some years ago I sold a lot of kits incl. a new cylinderhead, that was perfect, but now they are sold out. Better solution is a new compresssor from AMK, they are for example in the BMW E60, the Hitachi´s problem is the dismantling of the old piston-ring, mostly the piston breaks...., best wishes, Uli TDV8 4.4 from 2012, 278.000km like new + Lancia Flavia Coupe 1964 + RRS L494 3.0 SDV6 + C220CDI Convertible 2021

I found that you have to be sure to cut off all the old piston ring with a sharp knife. Only then do you get enough space to pry off the cap on the top without causing too much damage. It is soft metal, so will chip easily. I put a few nicks in mine learning this lesson, but the filed out easily enough and have no impact on the function of the piston with the new ring installed.
