+1 on changing the plugs. they are around £60 for the set, you might find you have oil in the plug wells (tubes) this would mean leaking rocker cover gaskets, ( £40 a pair,) so you would be doing no harm getting this sorted first.
then get codes reset.
this is a basic tick on your servicing sheet, for a new to you car, -remember 'plugs, points, oil, and water.' then you know its had its best chance... you have no 'points' nowdays.... oil and coolant change is around £100 for the parts. you just need a trusted garage to do the job, and to give you all the (matching) plugs back! then you know they are all done.

one other thing, keep an eye on the coolant level. these cars do have issues with hardened water seals/joints. easy-ish to sort out, but dont find out with an overheat. that is going to be dramatic!

also, is the car petrol only, or lpg and petrol. if you are getting errors on petrol, assume above etc. if its throwing these errors on lpg, just run it for now on petrol....

We've had our 2003 4.4 for nearly a year and apart from a new alternator and battery fitted under warranty and the steering telescope mechanism which I didn't notice until later it's been a joy to own. For what I paid I could have bought a new tin box with a 7 year warranty but it would not have been any fun at all. Like all forums this one tends towards people discussing problems with the car and offers useful advice and fixes, but you have to remember there are thousands of these cars out there problem free that you will never hear about. Hope you get sorted and enjoy a trouble free experience in the future.

If you are not happy wielding spanners, you can still save lots of money (and in my experience, get a much better result) by using a good Land Rover independent specialist instead of a main dealer (who likely is more interested in selling the latest WAG handbag Evoque, not sorting a 12 year old FF that’s nearly as old as the apprentices). Maybe someone else in Devon can recommend one local to you? I used to take my 322 to an excellent indy (Oxfordshire, so no help to you) after I found the nearest dealer service to be ****; I take the 405 to the dealer I bought it from only because of the initial warranty etc., though I am glad to say it has been faultless so far. Norman

Thanks Haylands. Changed location. I was trying to be positive about my FF. I expect to have issues at some stage, it is a 12 year old machine after all, but I'm loving it at the moment.This is my fourth RR, all relatively old including a 2 door and 4 door classic and a P38, done many thousands of miles and never broken down. Worst case was rear wheel bearings on the P38 . I have a repair/ service/ replacement fund in case of disasters and it's also a nice place to sit and wait for the AA Very Happy Very Happy

Mine was a well looked after example but it did have a few issues when I bought it, it was cheap enough though...

Look at page 12 in my build thread (Link in sig strip at bottom) to see what mine had in the first year of ownership, most of these parts were down to age/mileage...

Most early 322's will need similar sooner or later..... you can't expect an old complex heavy car to not wear bits out...

Thanks for all your comments. I have got the beast booked in with a local Land Rover Indy on Tuesday. After reading all your posts, I did some research, found a couple of highly recommended chaps down in Devon. Both of them have said that there is a good chance that it will not be the knock sensors!? I hope not!
The £300 I spent on the o2 sensors was for the parts alone, bought genuine ones and did them myself. Thank the Lord that when I had it plugged in again afterwards the error codes for the o2 sensors was gone, but was still showing 'knock sensor 1, low voltage' so going to get this looked at this week. Fingers crossed, as mentioned, both the Indy mechanics have said that it is more likely to be the coil packs or plugs.
In the very comprehensive folder I got with it when I bought it, it states that the plugs have been changed in the last year, but as you say that some main dealers haven't changed them in the past, i guess that can't be guaranteed.
I am fairly handy with the old tool kit, and enjoy this side of Land Rover ownership, but on my previous vehicles, most of this has been routine servicing and adding weight, (mods) to them. I guess I'm a little unused to not being able to diagnose and fix issues myself quickly. So it looks like I'm going to have to get myself some sort of diagnostics kit. Any recommendations? Mate of mine has just ordered the 'carsoft i930'? Anyone got one of these?
Myself and the family absolutely love the thing, and as this is our first of the V8 variety, we are particularly reluctant to get rid of the beast.
When we had to sell our off roader D2, myself and the Mrs were gutted, but we had to get rid, because having two seats when you have a new addition to the family, and those two seats being 6 inches higher than standard isn't ideal, and we were aching for the day we could get another one. But wisely or not upgraded to the L322.
And as I'm sure all the married chaps on here will agree, having to spend money constantly on your car and hobby, doesn't always go down too swimmingly with the old ball and chain!!! Thumbs Up
But I will say, that it was, said ball and chain who wanted one!!! And a V8 one at that!!! Thumbs Up she's a good girl.

I looked long and hard at all the diagnostic tools and if you want to be able to do everything JLR can and then some you can't beat the IID tool by Gap.. they also have excellent customer service...

As it happens, the main reason I took a while to reply was you mate!! I've been completely engrossed by your thread. It's brilliant skip! Hats off to you, and I am a man of the same heart as yourself, love messing about with these things. I haven't got all the way through your write ups yet, but have bookmarked it and keep going back to read more, and then a bit more. So where did you get all the led's for both the interior and mainly for the reversing lights? Living in Devon we only really have starlight to guide us at night!!! So reversing light mod would be a huge help. I am going to have to invest in a diagnostics kit of some description. So will check the GAP site out. Any other suggestions?

And thanks again everyone for your positive input and comments, on the subject of owning, living with, fixing and maintaining one of these truly epic and remarkable pieces of design. (AKA piece of S**t money pit Bast**d)

Understanding your Rangie, and how it works etc, is the key to making better decisions on what to fix, first, or last etc.
We all get our ranges, and have a spend up sorting out a few bits. Sometimes what we think is immediately obvious. But even if you happen to be useless with the spanners, it's all good info here. And fun too.
Indeed we often talk about days with these cars, with no faults problems or hassle. Just a great day out, with a picture of it next to some scenic stuff!
Pete Haylands, is a great asset. And he takes his green machine to places, we can only dream about. He's on YouTube, Although there are many on here with skills in different forms, like legal stuff, dealership talk, overseas owners, with expedition type adventures. Detailers, unusual model history models. All sorts. And humour too.

Don't forget to take off your plastic brakepipe covers underneath and check the brakepipes,get it waxoiled,change the transmission oil,put a shovel in the boot and get out on Dartmoor when it is snowing and enjoy the luxury.When all goes wrong just ask yourself could you go back to your bmw 3 series!!

Steady, Glad you like the write ups.... something like this will do the reversing lights, solder them together in parallel to make a run of 4 with one tail coming out between the middle two, cut open the reverse lights with a dremmel or angle grinder, hot glue them in nice and straight as they do show, then seal it back up again... Best measure them to ensure they will fit, I used the old style LED's but the cob ones are brighter...

Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey

Two happy comments from me:
1. I don't know a more comfortable car. I used to go fishing near the south coast of Ireland. One time I drove from there to Perthshire and back to Edinburgh in a day, with just the ferry as a break, heavy/jammed traffic around Dublin and a stormy wet night in Scotland. I was tired, but no aches and pains and could easily have done the same the next day.
2. If you have decent tyres it does well on ice and snow. On Saturday I was in the Scottish Borders, travelling between two farms on untreated roads, on farm tracks covered with ice that were hard to walk on and through some snowy/muddy fields. No problems. I use Goodyear Duratrac 255/55R19s in winter. Only Range Rovers since 1988

We all love the bl**dy thing, I think that's half the problem. And the working and tinkering with it, is part of what I love about owning things with a green oval. Just didn't expect this much so soon. But I dropped it off at a highly recommended Indy chap this evening, to keep for a couple of days to check it all out for me. So fingers crossed its nothing major. Thanks again Pete for the info, re- reversing lights. Going to do this mod, as its chuffing dark in Devon. No street lights down here.
CS- completely agree with you, wouldn't be any more tired getting out of one of these, than I would if I spent a day in front of the telly. (Doesn't happen these days. 3yr old sees to that bless him) and I have invested in general grabber AT's already. As do occasionally have the need for a bit of off roading.
Markyp- i couldn't agree more. I went on a Land Rover experience day a few months ago, and was offered a day In an l322 or a Sport. Needless to say I chose the FF, and when asked why, because the chap thought I was of the Sport sort of age. I told him that the Sport is more football match, whilst the FF is more polo match. You can turn up at the local tip, or the Windsor horse show. All in one vehicle. Shame they can be a pain in the arse.
