My money is on the wheel arch liner - possibly grill section at the front of it?

All plastic i think. Could be a water shield on one of the brake discs.

Agree with dolphinboy. They crack around the bolt fixing points and break loose. I discarded mine on my Td6. Never noticed any difference and no problem on the MOT. That said they are there for a reason so best to repair if it turns out to be that. |

Yes to this, ours did the exact same thing recently, sounded awful when driving the car as well! Backing shield had rusted and the bolts had pulled through the plate. |

They're often referred to as splash guards, grit guards, water shields, heat shields and more often than not, rattly bit of tin on the back of the brake disc. In different vehicle manufacturers parts catalogues, they're given all sorts of names. |
