glovebox 50 amp fuses .. HELP!

hi all, i am trying to find out what the 50 amp maxi fuses are for in the glove box fuse box. basically i have recently bought a 04 plate l322 td6, amazing car and surprising everything works apart from the folding wing mirrors. basically i have checked every fuse i could find and found a 50 amp fuse blown the one closest to the smaller fuses. i put a new fuse in and within a couple of seconds there was an really bad electrical smell and a very large amount of smoke from under the bonnet. I immediately pulled the fuse out and the smoke finally cleared. i myself am a mechanic and quite skilled at electronics but cannot find anywhere on which circuit this fuse protects. if anyone can help me out i will be incredibly grateful as i have a place to start! also if anyone close ever needs any help with diagnostics, mots and work i will always help anyone out! thanks in advance!!

The 2004 must differ a bit in its fuses the only 50amp fuse in the glove box of mine is a spare. The four large fuses to the right in mine which is a 2009 are 30 and 40 amp fuses for engine fan braking and such like.

Wish I could be more help, I am assuming there is nothing marked on the back of the fuse panel for them? mine tells me what they all are. That was not meant to be patronising btw although I admit it was a rather obvious question. 09 TDV8 Westminster, Mariana Black, Rear seat entertainment, hatch bag and 2 slobbery mutts

Hi thanks for yous quick reply. There was a spare 50 amp above the 4 50 amp fuses and there was nothing on the card on the flap also there's nothing in the manual either. I had a fault code for electric cooling fan in the pcm so that would make sense but then again the smoke was coming from around the bulkhead so unless a wire has shorted somewhere then may not be. I usually enjoy fault finding but when it's my own car it's a chore !

It's your electric cooling fan in front of the radiator - it's all that fuse does. I expect your fan motor is seized, the computer spins the fan for a few seconds as a test, at which point the fuse blows.

You can unplug the fan and refit the fuse to prove the fault.

Download the RAVE CD, it contains all the factory workshop manuals for your car. it's in the wiki i think

As above but instead of just putting a replacement fuse in to see if anything happens after disconnecting the fan motor I'd be inclined to test the output of the fuse position for a short to earth. It's always possible the fault is a cable shorting to earth. You really do not want a cable fire on an L322. Thumbs Up
