Hi all been reading the forum for a while now and found it very interesting an informative.I am interested in purchasing a full fat range rover ,have approx 11 k budget and will be useing it as a second car doing no more than 6000 miles a year.
Having read the threads on here think either beamer or jag 4.4 v8 would be ideal ,inclining to think beamer engine the better should I decide to LPG at a later date, wouldn't want anything less than a vogue but looking presumably at 2004 /2005 models. can you update sat navs on these and at what cost or do they still do the job at this age?Looking for low mileage FSH ect but should I be put off something approaching 1000k if looked after.
I have read the threads informing what to look for on purhasing and very helpful.Also noticed a few 4.2 turbo going around the £11k with 10000 miles ,what are your thoughts on these?As prev mention using as weekend car but will not be capable of doing any servicing or maintanance myself.
All thoughts opinions appreciated.

Definitely worth buying the SC over the 4.4 BMW or Jag IMHO... Best/most reliable engine they made of that era

Have to echo what Craig said there.

I was in the same boat as you, looked at all the options available and plumped for the 4.2 Supercharged. They were only available as a Vogue SE so had all of the options on them usually.

You should be able to get a nice 2005 or 2006 for the money you're looking to spend.

I've got the Jag 4.4 (non SC) and I've never felt it lacked power. I like it. However, they are rather hard to find in the UK, which makes the SC a good alternative.

Updating the sat nav in the 03-04 cars is easier as its all plug-and-play BMW bits. But it's not impossible in the others and the 07+ cars have a nice infotainment system anyway.

Looking to stay in low tax band due to being second car and prob only dfo 5 or 6000 miles a year,prev been looking at low mileage 04 plates with approx 55000 miles with the 4.4 engine the supercharged 4.2 in my budget all are going to be 100000 miles should this be a worry ?

Worth holding out for an AJV8 4.4 - it's an unsung hero in my opinion.
I owned mine for 18 mths with no reliability problems at all.
You get over 300 bhp, if you want it, combined with decent economy. I achieved high teens all the time with mostly 19 is with 23 on a run. No need for an lpg conversion with that ?
You also get the better ZF gearbox over the BMW engined car.
I looked long & hard for one and wasn't disappointed.
Just make sure it was first registered before 23rd March 2006 to take advantage of the lower VED.

I recently bought a 2007 4.4 VSE. Under your budget, 4 previous owners, full main dealer service history, excellent condition with 130,000 miles. However I don't see that as an issue - 100,000 is a number from years ago when cars really were knackered if they saw that sort of mileage. Nowdays what does it matter?

As above, I see MPG into the 20s; it's plenty powerful enough and really suits the RR. Hard to find but worth looking for.

I had a 1989 Mk1 Golf that I took up to 268,000 and it ran like a dream. I'd still be driving it too if it hadn't have been written off by someone in a 4x4.

Mileage is only ever an issue for the purchaser, not the owner.

Does the 4.4 beamer unit not carry the zf box,if not what gearbox does it have?and are they OK .?the question really I suppose is di go for 4'4 ltr with 55000 miles vogue or a 2005 4.2 supercharged with 10000 miles?

BMW had the 5 speed ZF gearbox which was known to have problems. It was also used in other BMW cars (7 series I think) and the Audi S8, where it was considered the Achilles heel of the car. I had one (teh Audi) and lived in fear of the day it was going to pop. I actively avoided any RR of the age that woud have used the same gearbox.

Not all will fail but there are enough stories out there to indicate it is a weak point.

Jag engines have a ZF 6 speed box without the issues.

Cheers for that,learning some thing new every day,so a 4.4 lrt with jag engine in pref to 4.4 beamer as not expecting to ever LPG it(understand jag 4.4 can have issues lpgd.or 10000 miler 4.2 supercharged.only considered with full sh and receipts of works carried out.Any particular preference?What are the cost of gearbox overhaul out of intrest?

That would be (and was) my preference.

From what I've read on this site my opinion is that the Jag era cars seem to be better. Not infallible but a definite improvement over the BMW ones.

Gearbox repair on the S8 was *at least* £1000 upwards once you've found someone capable. Mackies in Scotland was a name that was mentioned frequently. Handy if you're in Scotland, not so much if you're anywhere else. I've no idea what the costs would be on a RR.

At the very least a thorough gearbox flush and new filters will help. Whatever model you buy I'd recommend dong this as a preventative measure.

The good thing is that there are loads and loads of SC models for sale to choose from and compare against.

The bad thing is (if you don't want a SC model) is that there are loads and loads of SC models for sale.

I stumbled across our 4.4 NA purely by chance; I had no idea they were rare until I joined this site. One of the previous owners has fitted the SC grille and vents to ours which look nice.

I would go for the higher mileage, newer car over a lower mileage older one.

Cheers for that one being sold in Nottingham by dealer called son prestige,seems to have had lots of money spent recent service flushed box new coolant pipes within last 12 months any comments appreciated

It's got the older dash so no touch screen entertainment system, doesn't have the Harmon Kardon sound system, no Terrain Control stuff. I'm sure there's other stuff that more experienced members can see.

Being a 2005 model would this have the potentially troublesome ZF gearbox?
