How bright should the BMW screen be?

I've had a hunt around and can find references to screens with no backlighting but not to anywhere which shows how bright the screen on my 2003/4 Vogue should be. At night it's fine but on a typically bright sunny Aussie day, the map isn't the easiest to read - especially compared to the screen in my wife's Forester.

I've had the car for less than a month so I have no idea how bright it might have been when new. Is there an autodim that might be activated when it shouldn't be?

Oh, my screen displays BMW when it comes on, not Land Rover. The options on the screen don't match the handbook, either. The handbook refers to day/night but there's is no option to set that on mine. It's possible something in the back has been changed as the unit in the back has DVD printed on the front panel and I thought that the unit wasn't so labelled in my model Ron B. VK2OTC

From what you describe it sounds as though a previous owner has changed the satnav unit from the origonal Mark 3 cd based system to a Mark 4 DVD based system from a BMW car hence the BMW splash screen and different screen options.
Although better than before it's still nowhere near the capabilities of Tomtom, Garmin etc and other car manufacturers.
I have to agree the screen isn't the brightest in summer daylight but personally I've not found it a problem over here.
There is a screen brightness setting in systems configuration with which you can alter the screen brightness, mine is set on max brightness permanently.

Thanks very much for the reply. My system is set for max brightness, too.

I notice my GPS menu doesn't have an off-road nav option, either. Ron B. VK2OTC

The off-road option doesn't seem to have been an option on the BMW cars, come to think of it why would it.
Mine doesn't have the option either.

Hi,
Yes, previous owner has upgraded your "navigation computer" from LR mkIII to BMW mkIV.
MkIV was never available for L322, but since the whole car is basically BMW e38/e39, they newer BMW units are plug&play.

1) Offroad map was LR only feature. BMW X5 was never intended as offroader, thus this was not included, ergo it's not available on mkIV units.
2) You can change the startup logo if you want. Internets are full of "upgrade" cds for mkIV with different startup logos.
3) The screen will not get any brighter. Technology has simply moved forward in the 18 years since the 16:9 navi unit became available from BMW. Only way is to upgrade the whole unit to one of the Android head units that you can buy. IMO they all look crap and look really out of place in L322.
