Gearbox top up question...

Just a quicky, in Rave in refill procedures it says starting from P, select each each gear for 2-3 seconds...... so is that saying R N D or R N 1 2 3 4 5 D ? And will it select any gear above 2 when stationary ?

It's written in plain gibberish Shocked Shocked Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

It means P R N D N R P

For the 5-speed transmissions: On the V8 only 1st gear can be selected manually when stationary in high range, the ECU will reject any other request. The TD6 allows you to select 2nd gear too. In low range 1st, 2nd & 3rd are available from rest.

Don't do what I did a while ago.... was a good boy and checked the filler plug could be undone before I drained all the oil out, then as I'd loosened it I thought (In a moment of madness) may as well take it out now.... forgetting the oil level with the engine off is well above the fill level....

Result was I spent more time cleaning up my mates garage floor than doing the change.... Whistle Whistle Whistle Pete

So part one of the multiple evening gearbox rehash has been completed... I have managed to completely flush the gearbox Whistle 15.5 liters of oil later Shocked Shocked thought that they only took 11 Sad It wasn't a very nice colour for a 25K box, but it didn't have much, if any sparkly bits in it..... And I can report that it is really behaving its' self, just got to swap the Torque Converter tomorrow night, and do the axles Wednesday.

I can now see why they charge so much to change the oil, let alone flush it....... took almost 3 hours Shocked The Jeep took less than half that, and I didn't have to wait and wait for the oil to get to the magic temp.... Why didn't they just put a bloody dip stick on the box and have done with it.. it's worked well for ages Rolling Eyes Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I would love to agree with you there Bud, but the gearbox is American in design and built in France Shocked
And lets face it L/R are not the only company to seal a gearbox and do away with the dipstick, they are all at it, even the 'Mighty Toyota Landcruiser' ( Rolling with laughter ) was saddled with a sealed gearbox around 2004. I suppose that in one way they are better because it removes the need for Joe Public to check the levels and get it wrong... but at the same time it doesn't do the mechanic any favours Evil or Very Mad

Why couldn't they have fitted a dipstick with a threaded cap.... that would put pay to Joe Publics' illusions of being the next Isambard Kingdom Brunel Shocked Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Whistle Err well I beg to differ with you there matey, cos it's now done Mr. Green

4.5 hours start to finish, 3 hours to take apart, 1 hour to wrestle it all back and 30 mins to do the oil again. The biggest ache was the engine leveled its' self when the box came off, but do you think we could get the blighter high enough to refit Censored Censored It gave up in the end, but there were a few choice words said, and at one point I was doing impressions of a transmission jack as the one we had ran out of travel....... and then we dropped the ramp a few inches and gained all the travel we needed, too late Censored Censored Censored Banging Head Banging Head

I wouldn't recommend doing this job without a ramp, I recon it would be near impossible Shocked

Anyhow it's all back together and appears to be behaving its' self, I will have to take it on a longer run to see if the fuel consumption is nearer last years figure, cos so far in 2016 I've been getting petrol consumption from a diesel Shocked Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
