4.2 Supercharged or 3.6V8 diesel

Hi All

After almost a year without a FF considering coming back. Wont be doing a high mileage 7 to 8k a year so considering either a 4.2 v8 supercharger or seen a few high mileage 3.6 V8 diesel. Anyone any thoughts? kind of leaning towards the 4.2 supercharger at the minute as loved my old 4.4V8 petrol. Budget is ideally around £9k but for the right car up to maybe £12k.

Thanks

I bought a 4.2SC, I cover @ 6k pa mainly on weekends, always have a smile on my face Wink

It is personal preference, I didn't want t risk any diesel issues, egr/turbo/engine failure....

I have driven a 3.6TDV8 and they are good too, Regards

4.2SC with LPG... best of both worlds, get one already converted, not pulling much of a premium at present.... Thumbs Up Pete

Kiter like you I only cover 5 to 6k in my 4.2 and I love the power when you need it. Yes it is a thirsty beast but it gives me lots of big smiles. The price of petrol is low at present so just go for it and enjoy. Very Happy Very Happy The worst thing about being retired is you miss out on all the bank holidays

I've had a 3.6 for 18 months and I haven't had any hint of any of the "problems" people talk about - its got plenty of get up and go, and I feel sure it will sell much more easily than a SC when the time comes Thumbs Up

It's the age old thing - out of the 1,000's of 3.6's sold, the ones with problems are the ones that (largely) get talked about on the forums.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of 'smile appeal' being behind the wheel of which ever you choose Thumbs Up

4.2SC

went through the same thoughts, and couldn't get past the thought that I would always be on tenterhooks about a turbo or egr issue all the time driving.

I love the SC, is a joy to drive and I don't have the constant what if thought. V8 or else ...

Had mine two days now and hoping for big things. It had service history and at 65K feels like an almost new car.

Thanks All for the advice - must admit I'm really leaning towards the SC.

Reason for coming back is getting shot of the Volvo Hybrid - it has been great until a few months ago and problems have started - 3 times I have been stranded at the house when the vehicle refuses to release the plug - when that happens it wont start, cant move it etc. Unfortunately our local dealer is an Arnold Clark and to say they are totally useless is an understatement. Since they did a software update it doesnt seem to run as well and quite often wont engage AWD so its time to go. At the same time my other half has a new job so the SQ5 is available for everyday running for me, plus I still have the defender. Really miss the FF so decided there needs to be one in the drive again.

As an aside really enjoying my defender - getting her ready for a mammoth trip this summer - taking her to Iceland for the whole of July and cant wait. Costing a small fortune with all the upgrades but will be worth it.

I have a 3.6 TDV8 and I love it. It is my first diesel, always opted for quicker petrol gas guzzlers in the past (Impreza GT, B5 RS4, 911 Turbo, even my winter car was a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 petrol). No regrets at al. I love how rare I need to refill, has enough grunt even bone stock. Love how I can go for a skitrip to the mountains which is a 900 km round trip and I can cover that with one tank.

That said though I did not have a chance to drive an SC, surely faster, surely sounds better, but remember it still is by no means a fast car anyway. 07 3.6 TDV8 Vogue
