Xenon headlight components

Hi All
Had a problem with offside headlight refusing to light, although it mostly comes on if I flick the switch a few times. Seen a good few posts on here about the headlight module (ballast)/ igniter. Last weeekend I swapped modules side to side but the problem stayed on the offside. (I had already swapped the bulbs with no success)

Reading the old searches again, I may have misunderstood. Is the igniter seperate to the silver module secured to the back of the lamp casing with three screws? If so, where is it? Inside the lamp casing?

I looked on Microcat but it doesnt help as LR sell the headlamp complete. My guess is that I will get the seperate components from a Bosch specialist if the igniter is a seperate item.

The only other poss is an external fault on the BECM output, but it seems unlikely given the fact that it will come on if flicked. Is there any other ECUs controlling the headlight? There must be one for the autolevelling I guess? Thanks in advance

This is what I had. Behind the headlight there is a ballast. Inside the light unit itself is an ignitor. The ballast is easy to change, the igniter is a bit more fiddly as you have to take the lense of the light then undo the internal cluster to get at the ignitor (which is basically the cable that connects to the bulb). The ballast ups the power, then the igniter lights the bulb.

If you are having trouble lighting it but once its on it stays on it is more likely to be the igniter not the ballast. There is more info on this on the net.

You cannot get the igniter from land rover but I did find a company that sells both the genuine bosch ignitor and/or ballast. I did put it on here somewhere when i fixed mine. I have had no problems since and much cheaper then a new headlight.

I did have to realign my headlight after but the whole process of getting at the igniter wasnt to hard.

That company only shows the ballast on there website. I called them and gave them the part number to my ignitor (which was on the unit itself). I cant remember the price but it was cheaper than the ballast. Once you get the light apart there was 2 small screws holding the igniter in and a wire to simply unplug. Reformed

An old thread but is the Igniter the black square unit with the thick wire coming out (plus a connector with 3 wires) or is it the unit which is attached to the side of the xenon light holder (see pics 1 and 2)

This unit?



Or this one?




How does the unit holding the light surrounds come out? I presume you have to unscrew the light adjustment screw all the way out first.

Hi Paul, the ignitor is the one in the first picture. to get it out you pop off all the metal clips around the headlight lens glass, remove glass lens, lift out the silver surround and then pop out the silver lenses. You need to go careful because the poppers that hold them in get brittle and can snap off. If you get stuck or would like a hand I'm more than happy to pop up and help you out as I've done this job in the past week - I'm down the road in Corsham. I've got an ignitor here you could try but I think it's intermittent. I bought 2 used ones and 1 new one and swapped around a load of different combinations so I can't remember what I'm left with, but you're welcome to try it.

Thanks! Managed to get at the igniter unit. Its a headlamp unit that I have spare, the indicator fixing lug broke off so we had to buy a new headlamp and kept the old one.

Turns out it was a loose connection on the back of the headlamp unit Whistle
Car passed MOT with flying colours Bow down Thumbs Up

Tagging on to this thread. As I understand it, the bi-xenon lights are the same on main and dipped beam and there is a shutter which moves when changing between. Main beam also brings on the halogen bulbs.

If that is correct, what would explain the bi-xenon being off when dipped but on when on main?

I may well be wrong in my understanding and am open to correction. Would appreciate any comment. John

I have had to change the unit but was wondering if I could rescue the old one.

I was getting main beam on both xenon and halogen but no dipped beam and "check dipped beam" message, which seemed to be related to the shutter? John
