TD6 'Fuel. inject System' failsafe

Hi all

Being fairly new to this forum, and being a busy chap in the events industry I don't post often but I thought I'd share my recent experience in case it helps anyone out in the future.

My MY2005 RR Vogue developed an intermittent fault just AFTER I had driven my sister to the church thank goodness! I got 'Fuel Inject System' on the message centre and it refused to start- it would turn over but not fire. The logical thing to think is that the high or low pressure pump had failed. Anyway, I managed to start it after lots of on and off of the ignition until I almost managed to trick it into thinking it was fine, and it drove from Cirencester back to Exeter without fail.

Unfortunately every morning since then my wife has been unable to start it in the morning. A good friend is a LR specialist in Wells. JRL Parts. He gave me lots of useful advice which has helped to trace the fault.

A lot of diagnostic computers won't tell you if there is an injector fault as they aren't monitored by most. However, for minimal disruption I got to a workshop that services and inspects our lorries (big thanks to Synchro Plant Exeter) and they helped point me in the right direction to do a diesel spill test, which involves 6 plastic bottles attached to the return on all injectors. No. 2 injector was spilling excessive diesel back on the low pressure side, indicating that the injector was faulty. I have a new Bosch injector coming after the weekend at a cost of about £150 exchange. So the failsafe system in the ECU was detecting low pressure somewhere in the injection system but not showing it on diagnostics, because it wasn't pinpointing it to a pump, and doesn't have the ability to tell me information relating to the injectors.

The point I'm making in a very long and drawn out way (!) is that I was convinced it would be a pump, but the diagnostics would likely have told us there was a fuel pressure issue relating to one or other of the pumps. In fact, it's quite straightforward accessing the injectors and running a spill test, and I'd thoroughly recommend doing this as a first port of call due to the fact they can't be pinpointed by some or indeed most diagnostics systems. I could have spent a lot on pumps and hassle to no avail. JRL Parts told me every time they have these symptoms they work back from the injectors and they were absolutely right as usual.
