Another gearbox question.

Hi guys,

Bought my wonderful Rangie 3 months ago. I towed my Caravan, a large twin axel, from Staveley in Chesterfield, all the way to Ashbourne in Derbyshire. A mixture of Motorway and A and B roads. Absolutly no issues at all.

Six weeks later, I hooked up the Caravan to take the family to Wales. Did about 35 minutes on the M1 and got the message "Gearbox Overheat". she locked herself in third and revd quite high. I limped to my warehouse in Barnsley and let her cool off for a couple of hours. Set off back to the caravan storage and samething happened after the same distance and time.

Had the gearbox flushed, new filters and fluid and tried again for Ashbourne a few weeks later. This timeshe did it quite quickly, however, i noticed what was happening and kept the speed and revs down. Stayed in third and wouldn't change up, but never actually got the message.

After our weekend away, set off and she towed beautifully over the hills. As soon as i was on the motorway, climbing an incline, same thing, revs up speed down. Again, kept it steady towing back and never got the message on the the message centre.

I've tested the battery (common fault on the P38 for gearbox messgaes) All looks good. 12.4v ignition off, 14.2v with engine runnning.

Had a couple of Snap on code readers on her. No codes at all !!!!

I'm taking her to a gearbox specialist in Batley on Monday.

Does this sound terminal, or could it be a Cooler or ECU fault????

Any help is gratefully received.

Check the main radiator!

Land Rover issued a Technical Service Bulletin in September 2007 for "High Engine Speeds and/or Transmission Shift Problems" which stated :

"The customer may experience high engine speeds and/or transmission shift problems after driving for 25 minutes or longer. There may also be the possibility of the transmission overheat message being displayed on the instrument cluster. High transmission fluid temperatures may be the cause of the problem"

In other words the transmission is selecting 'cooling strategy' mode as the bulk oil temperature has exceeded 140 deg. C.

The fault is caused by a partial blockage in the lower eight tubes of the (engine) radiator which supply coolant to the transmission oil cooler - supposedly caused by "depletion of the coolant corrosion inhibitor".

The bulletin states that it's not possible to clean out the partial blockage and that the radiator must be replaced.

Very well documented problem...

It is the engine rad and gearbox oil cooler...

Engine rad gunges up in the bottom, this part is used to cool the gearbox oil cooler... This is by bad design, it just happens after a few years... Rolling Eyes

Change

Engine rad
Gearbox oil cooler and thermostat, check manifold and replace if needed
Check oil cooler lines are clear and replace if needed

All will be cool and dandy again... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Pete

Very Happy

I know it off by heart now!

The VIN numbers are a useful check though, ours was right in the middle, since having the Radiator & Trans oil cooler changed, and the Header tank which went not long after, all had been good with it (just hope I havent upset the Range Rover Gods now!)

Wouldnt have thought so, there is another thread on here about a Radiator Flow Test, but if your VIN number falls within the range shown I'd guess it was the Radiator / Oil Cooler.

Read my thread (link in signature) somewhere in there is a picture of the real poor flow from a rad that looked nearly new when I bought the L322....

It's a cheap fix and easy enough to do yourself if you do DIY... I'd change the gearbox oil again though, it breaks down very fast at the temp the Trans overheat comes in at so it will have reduced its life drastically.... Thumbs Up

Mind you, if you need the lot it won't exactly be cheap....

The cheap engine rads off eBay are good enough, but I'd get an OE oil cooler... Island 4X4 are usually the cheapest...

Think about fitting one of these... very worth it to reduce the under bonnet temps
