What would fluctating gauge mean?

Started fine then on to gas fine, then twenty mins in very high then very low.
Stopped and checked all good.
Running low for rest of journey.

Normal levels this afternoon when cooled.
Normally steady as a rock bang in the middle.

Was minus ten this morning.

While its been below zero, I have noticed that the gauge slips off to the left a bit, but it takes ages to get to normal in any case (10 miles driving @ 50mph) .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink
