United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Santorini Black
auxiliary heater

Hi everyone, when I drive my Range Rover from cold there is a really loud humming noise coming from somewhere near the car battery area, when I switch the engine off the noise carries on for a few minutes, the noise disappears once the engine is warm, I assume the noise is the auxiliary heater, is it normal for it to run when actually driving the car (4.4tdv8)?
I assumed it only works when set up from timed heating menu to warm the car up prior to driving.

My 2012 Westminster does the same, all info I can find points to it being the aux heater, its seems that it uses that to heat the cabin while the engine gets up to temp, then it turns off. I agree it sounds a bit on the loud side but that seems common/standard. 2012 westminister Overfinch Obsidian Conversion

Many thanks, I did think the same, just wanted to make sure, didn't want to ask dealer as they they would probably say bring it in and charge me a fortune to tell me it is normal.

All normal, my TD6 Vogue does the same, depending on the outside temp. On cold mornings my FBH fires up to assist rapid warming of the cabin and engine. Late 2004 FFRR Vogue 3.0 TD6 Tonga Green

I think the temperature is 16c for oil burners and 1c for the petrols that have it those are outside temps and when they are those or below it kicks in to assist heating cabin Thumbs Up

My MY 2012 has since a few months also this humming noise, at first I also thought it could be the FBH. If it is coming from it, wat could be the cause? This noise is irritating and not normal.
But now with temperatures rising it still makes that noise after a cold start ( +10° C).
It disappears with the engine getting warm.
If a turn e.g. the right temperature knob from max to min the noise sounds different/ stops and comes back.
I also have the impression that the blower is not responding as fast as it should do?
Could it be the “famous” FSR? Anyway it is a kind of electric humming….
I will start the FBH tomorrow morning ( it will be cold coming night) with the remote to see if the noise is coming from it or not.

It is definitely coming from the FBH!
Now with the engine not running, what a noise!
So, one question remains: what is the cause?
And will it break down in the near future if nothing is done?
Perhaps I will disable it, taking the fuse out.
Must be in the engine room somewhere, under the glovebox is no fuse for the FBH. RR 2012MY TDV8 AB ipanema sand

Westminster,

Have a read of the operating parameters posted by MJDronfield in this link.

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic50325...p;start=15

It should give you the information on when and how the FBH operates.

Roverron

The FBH will run, IIRC, below 16C or until the engine coolant temperature reaches a preset point.

The other noise you refer to could be the FSR, lots of info on here if you search. Cheers

Thanks for the info Richard,
With humming noise I mean really abnormal noise.
I know how much noise a normal working FBH produces.
What I'm experiencing is 10 times more in volume and height.
And after the test this morning with only the FBH running, this extreme noise is definitely comming from the FBH.
So the FBH works normal, it heats, starts and stops as I command it to do, but this terrible abnormal noise gets me **up
I think it must be the blower that takes cool air in and drives the burnt fumes out?

Is there acces to, only removing the inner wheel fender and spray some WD40 on it, or....
taking battery out en the FBH itself.

Thanks spring and summer with higher temperatures is coming up!

Hi Ronald

That does not sound good at all. I agree the noise may well be the fan, although there is also a pump in the unit for circulating the coolant. I don't expect you'll be able to access the parts to WD40 without removing the FBH, which is a job that includes at least a part drain of the cooling system, with all the hassle that means. Cheers

Don't know if this helps or not but noise seems to be a known fault by Land Rover and a Tech Bulletin was issued in 2006 regarding the air intake of the FBH.

My 2006 TD6 also makes this noise and ill be investigating it soon.

I posted images of the bulletin on the following link.
