Uneasy about the 22" wheels and tyres in the snow

There is a strong possibility that local to me we will miss all of the white stuff which having only had the car a month its not a bad thing but I am curious to know if anyone has experience of how the L405 with factory 275/40/22 Conti's fitted performs in the snow.

I had Grabber AT3's on the old tank but never had the opportunity to try those out in the snow either but I am sure they and the L322 would perform better than the new car on standard tyres Rolling Eyes

Fresh snow - absolutely fine, but not as good as grabbers
Ice - not so much, but probably still better than grabbers

However, 22’s don’t make a particular difference - the sidewall isn’t much help in snow, so unless you’re going to 20’s to get a narrower 255 tyre, don’t worry about it. Even then the benefit is marginal, a 255 will cut slightly deeper into the snow

I run winter conti’s on mine - they’re 22’s and I live in a ski resort - the tread pattern is very similar - and that’s what matters in the fresh stuff - the winters are softer and have ‘sipes’ so much more grippy on the compacted stuff and ice.

Here’s what they look like back to back

Just take it easy - it will be far easier to accelerate than to stop........

I'm sure that's the biggest reason you pictures of crashed 4x4s in winter - getting going is much easier, stopping much harder...

Agree - there was another question today about getting up hills - much easier to get up than down - and you start to feel invincible - the FFRR is very good, but still has it's limits - it's very easy to believe the hype and get carried away.....

Scotland

My Turbines were excellent this week.

I did the pennines and everything, altho a few scary moments but that was mostly me just pushing my luck!! lol And having fun at the same time!!

I need to see what mine are but think it's Contis.[Actually just remembered they are Conti - Silent]

I'm due a new set shortly, and discs if I keep it for 6 months, but I am up for a double 22" set like Alistair for winter!!

I personally thought the 22's did far better than I expected. all smug in my new plug!

IMHO there’s nothing wrong with the 22’s

A couple of weeks ago we had crazy snow in northern Spain - I drove close to 70 miles in a snow storm with solid white roads (and motorways) - I had to cane it for the second half, but still made my 7am flight Thumbs Up

It was also the first time I’ve ever had to physically produce my snow chains in order to be allowed to proceed - still didn’t need to fit them though - it was the start of a 5km tunnel followed by a reasonably steep decline afterwards, but having already covered 50mor so miles, I was quite comfortable by that point.
