Torque Converter Test??

Afternoon All does anyone know if it’s possible to ‘test’ my TC using live values from the GAP tool?
I’ve the fluctuating revs and occasional ‘cattle grid’ vibration when accelerating
Don’t want to replace it and find out the problems are still there!

Not really. It’s a mechanical issue, as opposed to a an electrical one. Hugely common in the 6HP boxes, caused by a worn torque converter

Providing you have not left the issues too long, you will get away with a replacement TC and fresh oil and filter Thumbs Up

You can use the IIDTool to monitor and record the engine speed, turbine speed and EDS6 current simultaneously, at a reasonable capture rate, which - when plotted out - shows exactly what the lock-up clutch is up to

Thanks Phil excellent info Bow down I’ll read the manual for the GAP tool and see what I can do, just spoken to the local LR independent garage who have quoted £3300 as they suggest replacing the gearbox at the same time as the TC......thoughts please

You need to establish whether the EDS 6 solenoid current is fluctuating or not during the instability. If it’s rock steady and the engine speed is varying while the turbine speed is constant then the lock-up clutch itself is faulty. If you aren’t aware of any other problems with the transmission then I don’t see the point in replacing anything more than just the TC. There’s no need to open up the transmission to replace the converter so you don’t need a transmission specialist to do the job, any competent mechanic can do it. The critical think is to make sure that the converter has been re-manufactured by a company that is used to dealing with captive clutches, as the piston spring retainer has to be accurately re-welded back into position.

Thanks again Phil plenty to investigate!
Thinking worst case scenario (gearbox and T/C) what else would you all suggest I should plan to replace?
I’m thinking Turbos (been quoted £4800)
Egrs have been blanked and mapped out
Anything else I should consider on 2007 TDV8 143000 Miles??
