Locked Door Drama

OK So I went out to the Fatty at half Six this morning to start the old girl up. Opened the door got myself in & started her up no problem. The dash was saying -4c & I wished I'd put it under cover. Next - Start up the wife's car. Turn to get out & the door wont open (the Fatties door) Hmm, must've hit the lock button. Hit the lock button again - Nothing. Turn on the interior lights to see whats going on. Lock the doors, unlock the doors no luck the drivers door stays firmly shut. opened the window leaned out & locked & unlocked with the key - No luck. Lean across & try passenger door which thankfully opens no problem. By now times going by, I've got to drop our son off for his school bus & get to the Doctors so time to abandon the fatty which is running fine but wont open.

Now for the interesting bit, I'm not very mobile, knackered knees, knackered hips, dodgy ticker & a bit porky (read a lot porky)
Half stand up, twist around & try to get my leg over Very Happy the console. My foot is stuck between the seat & the steering wheel. I can't move & my dodgy ticker is thumping!

Managed to sit down again. Chill Chill Chill. OK Put the seat back as far as possible & try again. Woo Hoo I made it. Only damage is the microphone knocked off the dash.

Locked the Fatty & took the spare car. Small, Cold, Bouncy but the doors opened. So I did my stuff, came home, made a cuppa & read the wikki. It seems I need a piece of bent wire & to remove a rubber plug. Followed by a bit of luck.

So I armed myself with tools & wire & head outside. Now the sun is shining, first time for weeks & its +4c which is good.

Before I start lets try the door! it works! I get inside & start the car open & close the door & it works - every time. But will it last?

So I've pulled out the bung made a piece of bent wire which will live in the passenger door pocket & we'll see how it goes. In the meantime Fingers crossed.

Anything else I can do?

Did it freeze up (doors seals) while you were sat in it ? .

Hi Joe

The door seals were all frozen but I could open them. The drivers door had definitely been locked either by me or by itself. I just hope it doesn't happen again.

The inner mechanism of the door lock will have frozen adn the electrics don't have enough power to activate the release. You need to shoot some silicon into the lock. Thumbs Up

Hi Dolphinboy.

I was thinking something on those lines. But its odd it unlocked OK in the first place & then promptly locked itself once the door was shut again.

had a similar thing on my 12 plate last year when it was cold, but the lock would stick open, ie open door, go to close door and it wouldnt latch.

Good spray of silicone spray into where the bung is has sorted it for the rest of the year. Thumbs Up probably do it again before it gets really cold! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Opening the door would allow the ingress of cold air to the lock. John

EXACTLY the same happened to me on Wednesday morning!
Opened up started car, started up and put heated screens and heaters on.
Went and started wifes 208 and did the same.
After hers was defrosted off she went and I couldn't get back in my car.
Needed to get to work so had to climb in via passenger side.
Once at work (aprox. 5 mile drive) worked fine and has done since.
Will get some silicone spray today exactly where does it need spraying?
Paul.

into the interior of the lock (where the "hook" is that goes over the protruding restrainer (hope that makes sense! Will try and get a pic later)

Also where the rubber bung is.

Hi all.
Just reading this 'cure', how do you open a locked door to fix anything? It's not mentioned above. My passenger door won't open, even if you manage to grab the lock button with thin noses and pull it up, it just springs back down again. Inner door handle obviously isn't doing anythi g, I'm not that daft! Car is a 2005, last of the td6's. Mrs is getting proper grumpy about sitting in the back, and she knows I have a cordless angle grinder!
