Help - D post trim refitting the rubber grommets

Help Big Cry

I bought two new external black plastic trim panels to go on the D posts of my 2010 L322.

I then realised that to remove the 4 plastic rivets that secure the inboard part of the panel, you have to drive the centre pin, through the rivet, a couple of which end up inside the cavity. There is also a little rubber cup that goes through the hole, to presumably seal the cavity behind.

So I ordered 8 new plastic rivets (4 for each side) but apparently the rubber cups that they go into are seperate. So I then ordered 8 rubber cups as well , this is what the rivet and cup look like.

So far so good....now a week later, I just cannot remember whether the rubber grommets are inserted first into the metal bodywork and then the panel sits on top of the grommet head and then the rivet goes in. It makes sense as it would best seal the cavity but the panel obviously sits proud a little because it is sitting on the top of the grommet head. Like so....

Or, does the panel go on first, then insert the rubber grommet then insert the rivet like this...

Big Cry Embarassed :oops
I appreciate that this is not something you remove every day but does anyone know or can lift their tailgate and see if the head of the rubber grommet is visible under the rivet head or not.

Incidentally, the rubber grommets are nearly £30 for the 8 of them plus £10 for the rivets, so I only want to do it once. Shocked

Thanks in advance. 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography

Sorted: I used the indent/marks on the old panel to work it out. The rubber grommets go in first to seal the cavity, as I through, then the panel goes on top and then the rivet goes in Very Happy 2010 5.0 SC Autobiography
