I had new cam cover gaskets fitted, and at the same time had all PCV pipes replaced, the oil separator and PCV valve.

Garage (a very well respected LR indy) suggested I do an oil flush now and then again in 1000 miles, as there were lots of carbon deposits that he saw when replacing the cam cover gaskets. He showed me pictures and it did look a bot of a mess.

Since then I have done some reading, and there are some opinions that suggest NOT to do it, as it disloges said deposits and you could block oil ways etc.

Any advice suggestion as to whether I should do it?

Nope - for the reasons you found above. Frequent normal oil changes should be done. .

But, it's not a bad idea to replace the oil and filter, run for 1k miles, then change the oil and filter again, as a "flush"

If your local specialist says it needs too, having worked on your engine, I gather he knows better than anyone here to be fair, but indeed, I would really do the oil change right away and again in 1000 miles - then say every 5/6000 miles max.

is it a new car to you or did you not to oil changes in a while?

If you see deposits, it means the oil has been in there a lonnnng while - your engine does need some TLC ASAP - nice to read you did the pipes and gaskets  l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Hi,

Its a new to me car. I changed the oil as soon as I bought it, and will now do it as suggested above.

The oil in it currently looks good and clean, even after about 1000 miles.

I wonder if the PCV had anything to do with it.

The breather pipes across the top were like putty and rammed full of goopy oil, and the diaphragm was also full of crap.

All these have been changed including the oil separator.

It is now at least breathing like it should!

For sludge and carbon deposits to get stuck in an oilway means they have to pass through the oil pump first, the oilpump picks up oil direct from the filter so there is no way that any deposits can get to a narrow oilway... I have used flushing additives for years in really old abused engines and only seen improvements...

It's the same sort of old wives tale as not letting the petrol tank run low as you pick up the crud in the bottom of the tank... total hogwash, it doesn't matter how much petrol is in the tank, the petrol is picked up from a fixed pipe spaced off the bottom of the tank... no way on earth to drag crud through it more when empty than full...!!!

Interesting, as when my fatty went for her first service under my ownership, the much respected Indy put an engine flush through as part'n'parcel of the service. There was no question of 'would you prefer not to sir?' So they're either making a packet out of the treatment or they firmly believe that a flush is beneficial. I'm assuming they know better than me......or I'm gullible.......you choose  2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

I would always take the advice from someone who is more experienced than me.....

I always use a pint of diesel in the oil a few days before an oil change. Never had an issue an the new oil stays cleaner for longer. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal
