Audio upgrade mods - rear pillars? What have people done?

Hi All,

Hoping people can recommend me some threads to look at of food audio mods people have done.

I have an L322 3.6 TDV8 2006 facelift with the Harmon Kardon system. Correct me if I'm wrong but, I think there was two options - the Vogue came with the 'standard' Harmon Kardon and could be upgraded to the 'premium' one which added the twin port Subwoofer instead of the single driver and, speakers in the rear pillars.

I'd like to do a mod where I can fit some top quality full range speakers into the rear pillars (pictured) and potentially another Subwoofer somewhere. What have people done, to give me some ideas?

My assumption is for the full range speakers, I will either need to tap into the cables to the rear door speakers for signal to the amp, have a fibre optic/DSP amp or, run a cable from the AUX input (given that is all that I use) to a standard amp in the audio/visual bay.

My best advice, don’t focus on different speakers in the back. It won’t help with getting a good quality balanced sound out of the car. Only thing it may do is make a poor sound a bit louder. You got to look at the whole picture and take everything into consideration.

I would say the existing speakers are very good and, there's no need to replace them. I'd just like a bit more bass and a bit more oomph. Adding 2 speakers to the rear pillars seems a sensible option.

I think that is a futile exercise. Perhaps the reason why you got tumbleweed on the other forum with this question. Bass is non directional, and needs size to shift air at low frequencies. Just not enough space on those pillars to get those kind of frequencies.

If you want to improve then the cheapest option would be sound deadening material in strategic areas. And switch off Logic 7 if your system has it.

The other would be better quality speakers matched to the amp; there are some good threads on that on here. But to get the effect and benefit that would mean replacing ALL of them.

And the next step is to replace the amp and all speakers but likely would mean you won’t have an OEM dashboard left.

Naturally if you can fabricate interior pieces yourself then you can make anything fit, but considering the question I doubt that is the case.

This question was not asked on the other forum.

So, I ask why those speaker grilles are there at all? Land Rover were obviously wrong in just adding more speakers on some models, apparently. I find this extremely hard to believe.

The car was designed to have an additional 2 speakers in those locations...
All I'm asking is what projects people have done and if anyone has done a retrofit.

Have you got a topic on the site I can see about the audio upgrade you've done?

I’m pretty sure those speakers are only used as rear surrounds on the Logic 7 setup. Next to nothing comes out them on mine.

No they aren't wrong, it was a part of a holistic system setup. Just plonking some extra speakers there is not getting you anywhere. But hey how if you must then go for it, it just won't do anything. Just like it didn't do anything with those 80s/90s Halfords special rear parcel shelf speakers.

The 2 rear speakers only work with the Logic 7 switched on, that’s the case in mine anyway.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. They are just surround speakers for the Logic 7. Im surprised they didn’t get utilised more though.....

I have gone down this route only last week! As mentioned they only come on with logic 7 on and when I did that one had seized and was more of a tweeter.

Anyway long story short I’ve gutted my whole ice system including the amp and I bought an auto leads harness I had to do a slight repin of.

Long and short of it is I was always planning on buying new speakers but actually with a good amp the speakers are good and those surrounds will take a full range signal so long as the the xover is set over 90hz.

Even the stock sun is good on my system.

Where are you thinking of the second sub? As I’m so pleased with the existing one i wonder if another could be fitted opposite? I’ve never had that cover off all I can think that’s there is the fuel filler but may be wrong Current stable:

What I was thinking was to have either Two low/mid or two Low range only speakers in the rear pillars. I believe these are 100mm.

Useful to know if the current ones are already full range speakers.
Option 1 - New low/mid speakers. Run cables down the pillars from those speakers and into the audio/visual bay. Use the relevant speaker cables to create the signal to a new small amp to run the two pillar speakers. Turn down bass on Logic7 system and let the pillar speakers pick up some of this job.

Option 2 - freebie - add an extra sub. Another idea was to chuck a small sub in the boot - I still have the single Onyx sub from my first car. I kept it because it was an absolutely fantastic subwoofer. It wouldn't even take an hour to grab a pickup from the Harmon Kardon sub with a Vibe Fast Plug. Same would apply - turn the bass down on the Logic7 system, let those speakers deal with mid and high, whilst the 2x subs can pick up
the lows).

Option 3 - make use of the speakers in the pillars - grab the output to the rear door speakers. Add an amp, let these run in full range. Forget about adding additional Low range.

Think I’d do option 3, then can easily do option 1 from there, if you are not happy.

I think option 3 - they can handle a full range signal. I would wire them in series with the rear bass speakers so long as its a full range signal being sent to them. Current stable:
